Ian MacKaye... dead?9,741 views |
RichHorror - 10/2/07, 10:01 am
Can anyone confirm/deny this? ---- Ian Mackaye, lead singer of influential hardcore band Minor Threat as well as Fugazi passed away today in a Baltimore hospital room. Outside a Fugazi show in New Jersey last night, the singer was struck by a car passing by the front of the Ventura Theatre. Brunswick police say that the driver allegedly stopped, but then fled the scene. There is now a police investigation underway. Mackeye was rushed to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead this morning at 6am. This is a tragedy for the underground music as a whole and we need to stand together at this time of loss.

RichHorror - 10/2/07, 10:08 am
I wish I was clever enough to make it all up. I've seen it in a few MySpace bulletins, starting with one from Phobia. I know that isn't the most reliable source.

Let's see...I got this info too but it doesn't add up. Says he got hit in Brunswick, NJ last night but died in Baltimore? That's ~140 miles away. No way would they transport him to a hospital 140 miles/ two+ hours away if he got hit by a car. This just doesn't pass the smell test.
detuned - 10/2/07, 10:44 am
was it him or rollins that is/was a dead head

Harpo - 10/2/07, 11:18 am
Hello, Dischord? Are you alive?
juicebucket - 10/2/07, 11:18 am
Well all you have to do is look at what it says. A. A trip from Jersey to Baltimore would take quite a lot of time, even if air lifted, and if Ians life was on the line, they'd take him to the nearest hospital. B. Fugazi didn't play a show last night in Jersey, at least by what records say.
patrickm - 10/2/07, 11:41 am
i knew this couldn't be true, because if fugazi had played last night i would have heard about it, and i would have gone to jersey to see it.

from the baltimore sun. Ian MacKaye is alive. Elvis is still dead A phone rings at 6:08 p.m. in Arlington, Va. A 45-year-old man picks up. The caller doesn't even have the chance to offer a greeting. "I am still alive," reports Ian MacKaye, the frontman of such punk acts as Minor Threat and Fugazi, and the founder of Washington's Dischord Records. This would not be news except that The Sun and apparently many other organizations had been told that MacKaye was, in fact, dead. We were told that he died Monday night at Baltimore's St. Agnes Hospital. A call to the hospital found no evidence of such a patient. We followed up with calls to Dischord (left a message) and to MacKaye's home. "I am happy to report that I am not dead," says MacKaye. He and the record company had been blasted with calls, he says, after premature reports of his death were posted on MySpace and Wikipedia. He says he hasn't been able to find the MySpace reference, but had the Wikipedia posting removed -- and then re-removed, once someone reinserted the false news.
