I guess the people in the other thread called it. Drunk driving on a scooter is bad news. Hopefully nobody else got hurt.
neogonzo - 7/12/07, 4:21 am
i just saw a sticker on a light pole in Chinatown, in the style of those Andre the Giant Posse stickers.

it said "Mr. Butch has a Vespa."
adam - 7/12/07, 4:22 am
Whoever has a wikipedia accound should slap a big SOURCE NEEDED on that last line.
XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:22 am

****BAD NEWS****

Mr. Butch was in a scooter accident this morning...I don't know how he got a scooter, but he wrecked it this morning right in front of the Allston fire department (Brighton Ave). He was on the ground with a bleeding head-wound, and was unresponsive to the firemen who ran out to help.

An hour later, the road was still blocked off, so it can't be good. I am hoping against hope that he is really OK, and will be back on the streets in no time.

I don't know which hospital he was taken to, but he should be in your thoughts...he's certainly in mine.

XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:25 am
Mr Butch loved MDC
bonnie - 7/12/07, 4:26 am
supposedly he was around the allston economy around 6 am?
maybe?

what time was the accident?
flax - 7/12/07, 4:27 am
Robin I guarantee you if this is true it will be in many newspapers. And if it is true and this thread devolves into an argument about the rights of drivers a la the cycling accidents threads I will kill each and every one of you.
theaaron - 7/12/07, 4:27 am
wtf? this is not serious....i resent this.
JoeB - 7/12/07, 4:27 am
I can confirm firsthand that there was some scooter-related accident/police scene at like 8:20 outside the fire department, but it had been going on for a little while already.
jonleonard - 7/12/07, 4:28 am
I didn't find anything in Google news, but maybe it is too soon.

So myspace is the most veritable source we have on this incident.
danny - 7/12/07, 4:28 am
brighton ave right near twin donuts/the fire station was shut down when i went by at 9 this morning.

bonnie - 7/12/07, 4:30 am
oh man. this sucks. so the manager of economy allston definitely saw him outside this morning around 6 am.

which is why when i just told him about this he was like HE'S NOT DEAD, i SAW HIM THIS MORNING, but he saw him before it all happened.
wong - 7/12/07, 4:30 am
he did save my life once........like a super hero.........

tracks, who are you?
the.rog - 7/12/07, 4:30 am

danny - 7/12/07, 4:30 am

adam - 7/12/07, 4:31 am

XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:31 am

Vanya - 7/12/07, 4:39 am

the.rog - 7/12/07, 4:40 am
it's gotta be true at this point, this many unrelated people would never go in on the same joke together. [not that it would be a funny joke if it was true]
Vanya - 7/12/07, 4:40 am
My source is the Boston Police. He was taken to BMC.
flax - 7/12/07, 4:41 am
A statue or memorial in Allston is completely deserved here. I will personally put down at least $100/book a show also.
ryanz - 7/12/07, 4:42 am
this morning i asked him for a dollar in a joking/friendly way ....he offered me his only quarter because he is an amazing man. i hugged him. i didnt realize it was a goodbye hug.
XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:42 am
This Thursday at the Coliseum elks show we will get some money together.

nova - 7/12/07, 4:45 am
so as of right now, we don't know if he is hurt or dead. Correct?
Vanya - 7/12/07, 4:46 am
They're not saying if he survived or not. I'm on the line with BMC right now.
ssg - 7/12/07, 4:46 am
The hospital will not tell you anything. They can't. Patient confidentiality is a huge deal.
tommyvon - 7/12/07, 4:46 am
what im taking from this is , YES he was in a serious accident, YES the police know its him, YES hes at BMC.. thats all i can really take away from this thread.
debonaire - 7/12/07, 4:47 am
BMC probably won't release info
if you have his full name they MIGHT tell you whether or not he was admitted
apart from that, unless you're family they shouldn't tell you anything (hipaa)
Vanya - 7/12/07, 4:48 am
BMC has no record of a "Harold Madison" or "Mr Butch." Huh.
TheLustyGhost - 7/12/07, 4:49 am
Vanya - 07/12/07 at 11:40 am (216.183.191.226)
My source is the Boston Police. He was taken to BMC.

So he did actually die at the hospital, then? This is terrible.
Vanya - 7/12/07, 4:49 am
Ugh, the police gave me the wrong hospital. He was taken to Brigham & Womens.
ryanz - 7/12/07, 4:49 am
Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...
debonaire - 7/12/07, 4:50 am
they also just might not have a record yet
caroline - 7/12/07, 4:50 am
yeah i just got off the phone with BMC as well, same thing they told Vanya
XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:50 am

ManxomeFoe - 7/12/07, 4:51 am

matthew - 7/12/07, 4:51 am

XHARDSTARESX - 7/12/07, 4:52 am

then again, i don't know or love him

I'm still baffled by the lack of outrage and fear that he was riding a scooter in the first place. Either way, I'm glad he's OK. I just don't get the double standard when it comes to drunk machinery operating.

Be safe, Butch...

Harold Madison Jr. (Mr. Butch) was hurt in an accident this morning on his vespa in Allston. Reports were confused due to a fatality on Cambridge St. that did not involve Butch.

He is in intensive care at Brigham & Womens Hospital right now and is not recieving visitors. All people who have taken responsibility for his care and well being have been notified. Sue from Regeneration is bringing him his health insurance card right now.

He was in an accident but is hospitalized currently. This is 100% confirmed and not a rumour. Please pass it along.

Thank you.

Dan @ Regen

i'm not a doctor but if he went into icu this morning he's probably still there

Hrm. I just got this via myspace:

Harold Madison Jr. (Mr. Butch) was hurt in an accident this morning on his vespa in Allston. Reports were confused due to a fatality on Cambridge St. that did not involve Butch.

He is in intensive care at Brigham & Womens Hospital right now and is not recieving visitors. All people who have taken responsibility for his care and well being have been notified. Sue from Regeneration is bringing him his health insurance card right now.

He was in an accident but is hospitalized currently. This is 100% confirmed and not a rumour. Please pass it along.

Thank you.

this one time...matty mc was way way drunk at a bar during the winter time.

he decided to leave the bar by himself, and hike back to his apartment in lower allston.

he ran as fast as he could, and fell. He hit his head, and was probably knocked out in the could, with no jacket on.

mr butch woke him up and got him back to his feet. matty probably would have been realll sick if not dead.

venetianwife - 7/12/07, 7:50 am
I saw them take Mr. Butch away from the accident in an ambulance this morning around 7:45 AM. There were firefighters giving him CPR on a stretcher. This MBTA woman told me that he took a turn too sharply and ran over the curb, then crashed into a pole. She said he was coughing up blood and laying on the pavement. But there's a fire station literally 30 feet from where he fell, so they got to him right away. Has anyone else heard anything??

Mr. Butch, the street icon, dies in a scooter accident

(Mark Wilson/Globe Staff/file)

By Bryan Marquard, Globe Staff

Mr. Butch, the dreadlocked, homeless man who was an icon in Kenmore Square and Allston, was killed today in a scooter accident, friends and family said.

Boston police said there had been a fatal accident just after 7:30 a.m. on Cambridge Street in Allston, but did not release the name of the victim. Mr. Butch's sister, Jeannette Madison of Worcester, said she had been notified of her brother's death.

Mr. Butch’s real name was Harold Madison Jr. The 56-year-old had been the subject of YouTube videos, a MySpace tribute page, and a Wikipedia entry. He was so popular that The Boston Phoenix wrote in April that it was considering changing the criteria for its "Readers' Pick: Neighborhood Character" category because Mr. Butch won so regularly.

"He's been in so many local movies, videos, in the Phoenix -- he's like an icon of the neighborhood," said Erin Scott, manager of New England Comics on Harvard Avenue in Allston.

Mr. Butch had lived on the streets of Boston for about 30 years. In Kenmore Square and his neighborhood in Allston -- areas rife with college students and people who cleave to less traditional approaches to living in Boston -- some saw in Mr. Butch a latter-day Thoreau, a man who chose a life that didn't involve taxes, rent, or office cubicles.

maybe a mural or a plaque or something would be nice, but rather than spend a ton on a statue or something, i think money would be better spent on a donation to one of the many neighborhood service organizations that work to make allston-brighton a better place, such as the boys and girls club or something like that. just a thought.

gmfh - 7/12/07, 12:50 pm
He didn't seem like the type of guy who could die. How the hell did he get through all those winters? I heard something about him just breaking into whatever was nicest in the tow lot- tonight I'll sleep in a Cadillac, tomorrow an Escalade, etc. I heard him once confirm it and once deny it.

He was an absolute legend.
evanparker - 7/12/07, 12:58 pm
i think i talked to him once and convinced him to save up for the scooter in the first place
Dirigo - 7/12/07, 1:00 pm
Look on the bright side - the guy lived exactly how he wanted for 30 years, and made a lot of people laugh over those years. He was 56, and he died before he got some terrible disease, drank himself to death, and before advancing age made his homelessness a big problem for his health. His death was most likely sudden and painless, and that sure beats cancer.

Worst day ever.

If you go to Regen, they've got his things up on display. His leather jacket, his guitar case, etc. Along with a couple pictures, and a note about what happened.

Also, I went to the corner, in front of the fire station, and there was no evidence of a crash. I expected a little memorial. Does anybody know the pole he hit?

R.I.P. MR BUTCH
flipper - 7/12/07, 2:51 pm
Wow. When I lived in Kenmore Square in the summer of 1994, I was lucky enough to have regular conversations with Mr. Butch. When my parents came to town, I introduced them to him and he told them I was "a fine young man." My dad gave him a buck. It was one of those moments that is perfectly clear in my memory, 13 years later. I know he had his problems, but man. My reaction to this might be a little out of whack--the last time I said so much as hi to him was ten years ago, but still. I'm so sad. Kudos to Bryan from the Globe for this bit: "some saw in Mr. Butch a latter-day Thoreau, a man who chose a life that didn't involve taxes, rent, or office cubicles." Very well put; it's almost exactly how I always thought of him. This memorial service is going to be packed.

yeah, I first met Mr. Butch in 93 or 94 in Kenmore - he's in the video project I did that summer. I never was friends with him or hung out, but he was always really nice & cool. I definitely enjoyed having him come down and rock out during band practice at regen. It's the end of an era and it's silly to be sanctimonious or practical about his death - the dude was bigger than that.
walker - 7/12/07, 4:30 pm
also, so glad I wasn't around a computer today - this thread is agony. RIP.
ginn - 7/12/07, 4:40 pm
this is so terrible. i have been seeing mr. butch around boston since the first time i traveled through in 1996. ugh. this is the third death that happened this week that i have read about tonight. i am so sad right now. :" (
RadiocureMD - 7/12/07, 4:43 pm
I'm so sorry for anyone who knew Mr. Butch - and it seems like a lot of people did.

As of late, there have been many unexpected deaths close to me and close to many of my friends. It's so fucked coming to terms with the fact that life is so fragile. Everyday you wake up, go about your routine, achieve some fleeting sense of progress - never thinking about what a miracle it is to be alive and doing these mundane things. It's sad that it takes tragedies like today's to wake you up to this reality for a short time. When this happened to me a month ago I wanted to stop everything and just lay in bed and not deal with it. But, from what I gather from these posts, this guy was all about living in the moment and cherishing the fact that he was alive. I guess I've been listening to a lot of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Lately. But we're fucking lucky as hell to be here.
tommyvon - 7/12/07, 4:51 pm
its on the top of emailed stories on boston.com. front page of boston.com too.

I have a feeling alot of people over the years, not just current allston residents, will be turning up with stories and their condolences..

It's a sad day, but try to remember that he probably didn't suffer much, and he died doing something he loved.
FrankStallone - 7/12/07, 4:59 pm
It's true. He was so happy on that scooter.
chihuahuapunx - 7/12/07, 5:00 pm
Everyone has been really supportive and awesome...
A few facts to clear up:

Mr Butch crashed into a pole, he was not hit by a car. They do not think he was drunk, it was very early this morning. He died almost immediately, he had a weak pulse when they brought him to Brigham and Women's but was already braindead. His family has been notified and they are taking care of the burial arrangements. Butch slept in the old Witches With Dicks van behind Regen, which we bought for him to live in. He loved it. He was a very happy man, and he saved up for three years for that scooter, which he bought a few weeks ago. I will miss him immensely.

As for the memorial; we will all meet at Regen and Ritual Arts at 8pm this monday night. Mr. Butch always said he wanted a big blow-out party for his funeral and I know he would loooove to see how many people were there. We will have some food and drinks there, and then head to Ringer park with candles. At the park, we are going have some speakers, and then people can stand up and tell some stories and anecdotes about Mr. Butch. I think he would have really enjoyed that.
Also...mr. butch memorial tattoos are not a bad idea! ha!

Living on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
That's the way it goes

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true,
But save a few for Lefty too
He just did what he had to do
Now he's growing old

A few gray federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness I suppose

Here is the rest of the story eric posted:
Instead, he helped the elderly cross streets, joyously played air guitar, philosophized, and sang.

‘‘He’s been in so many local movies, videos, in the Phoenix — he’s like an icon of the neighborhood,’’ said Erin Scott, manager of New England Comics on Harvard Avenue in Allston.

‘‘He was just the sweetest, nicest homeless person — he looked out for people,’’ said Toni Fanning, who owns the Ritual Arts store nearby. ‘‘I’ll tell you, this whole street is just miserable right now. Everybody just doesn’t want to believe it. It’s so hard to talk about Butch in any kind of past tense.’’

In a YouTube video posted on Mr. Butch’s MySpace page, he offered a buoyant view on how to live: ‘‘You got to be articulate every day and keep going on strong and straight and use your heart and all your might and all your weight and all your power. Do what you can, make it last for many hour, ’cause once you’re dead, you’re done, you don’t come back,’’ he rapped, pausing before adding, ‘‘Yeah.’’

Fanning’s favorite encounter with Mr. Butch was on Easter a few years ago. When she left home to visit a friend who was in bad straits, she was depressed about her friend, the day — just everything.

‘‘And I walked outside and there was Butch standing on the corner of Harvard and Comm. Ave. with a big sandwich board that said, ‘I need weed,’’’ Fanning said. ‘‘I started laughing so hard that it got me through that entire day.’’

Mr. Butch was not timid about his pastimes: drinking beer and smoking marijuana. And he could be irascible. He was a tall and slender man, and the stoop of his shoulders signaled his level of intoxication. Unwelcome as Kenmore Square began tidying up its act, Mr. Butch left, telling friends that encounters with police officers had become too frequent.

Allston proved more tolerant.

‘‘I’m just devastated,’’ said Jerry Katz, a lawyer whose offices are along Harvard Avenue. ‘‘Everyone loved Mr. Butch. I loved Mr. Butch.’’

Though thousands of passersby made his acquaintance through the years, few knew much about Mr. Butch’s background. Born in Worcester, he grew up in a large family. His father, Harold Sr., dubbed him Butch.

A talented drummer, he sat in with bands and played with a mentor in the local music scene, picking up the guitar in his midteens and filling a closet with percussion instruments he made from items he found. He did not finish high school and moved to Kenmore Square in the 1970s when Worcester became inhospitable to his frequent drinking.

‘‘I think he was just looking for someplace to be accepted,’’ said his sister Jeannette Madison of Worcester. ‘‘He told us that this was the life that he chose — a street person, happy-go-lucky, panhandler. I guess for him that was easier, and it didn’t take very long for people to understand what he was doing and just take it with a grain of salt.

‘‘People are who they choose to be.’’

In addition to Jeannette, he has four siblings in Worcester — Russell, Phillip, Jeffrey, and Sheila — and a brother, Alphonso Moore, of Henderson, Nev. His mother, Virginia, died in December; his father died in 1974.

Mr. Butch played on the fringe of Boston’s music scene for years. Friends tried to get him into subsidized housing, but he refused to go through the required detoxification treatments. Recently, he lived in a van friends helped him acquire.

Trusted friends became his ‘‘banks,’’ holding onto his money and storing his belongings. Mr. Butch’s thee-quarter-length leather coat, with his name in white and red letters on the back, was displayed last night in the window of Regeneration Tattoo on Harvard Avenue as a tribute.

‘‘It kind of blows my mind that he isn’t here,’’ Scott said. ‘‘I have his guitar in my back room. I have a buck in his bank.’’

Friends plan to meet Monday at 8 p.m. at Regeneration Tattoo and Ritual Arts for a memorial, said Sue Jeiven, owner of Regeneration Tattoo.

‘‘He always wanted a big blowout for his funeral. He said: ‘Blow a lot of money. I want a big party,’’’ she said.

A favorite among many students and professors, Mr. Butch was once asked to speak at Boston College. Proud of the moment, he sent his siblings a photo of himself lecturing in front of the classroom.

‘‘I feel like he had a lot to say and there were a lot of people who actually wanted to listen,’’ his sister said. ‘‘And I thank the Lord for that. And I thank the Lord that Butch is in his hands now.’’

maybe a mural or a plaque or something would be nice, but rather than spend a ton on a statue or something, i think money would be better spent on a donation to one of the many neighborhood service organizations that work to make allston-brighton a better place, such as the boys and girls club or something like that. just a thought.

i'm going to have to second this. a mr. butch memorial fund could really go a long way towards helping out some underpriviledged people. from what i've heard (if sue or tony posts here, please correct me if i'm WAY off) there is enough money saved up for Mr. Butch to get a classy funeral and gravesite, so i'm not really sure what else collecting money in his name could go towards.

that said, it should really be up to the executors of his estate what the money is used for.
walker - 7/13/07, 2:46 am
you guys should raise enough money to tear down that hotel and rebuild the Rat or else just donate your money to charity and go to Mr. Butch's party.

i saw butch last week when i was driving through allston. he was swerving in and out of traffic on foot while we were stopped at a light. i was in a daze and i thought, or maybe i said, i can't remember, "it's nice to see you mr. butch." he always made me smile somehow. whether i had any money to give him or not, he was nice.

it's really rare that a community will take on someone who is so outside the mainstream and try to look out for them so they can live their lives they way they chose. my mother is schizophrenic, she won't take her meds or take care of herself. part of it is her decision and part of it is her in ability to make good decisions because of the illness. i alway dream that she could live the way she wanted in a place where people would look out for her and she'd be accepted medicated or not. to the folks who had a daily part in butch's life: you've done a good thing on so many levels.

To balance out "Pancho And Lefty" being a downer:

We all got holes to fill
Them holes are all that's real
Some fall on you like a storm
Sometimes you dig your own
But choice is yours to make
And time is yours to take
Some dive into the sea
Some toil upon the stone
To live is to fly
Low and high,
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the tears out of your eyes

O'Brien's has some open dates over the next two weeks. Anyone who wants to put on a tribute/memorial show in Allston for Mr. Butch (yes, anyone) on 7.17 / 7.18 / 7.22 / 7.23 or 7.24, just let me know. Also, The Ramoniacs are looking for bands to play with them on their tribute / memorial on Saturday 7.21. Any or all of these dates are available for this. I'd feel disingenuous trying to set something up myself since my encounters with him were relatively minimal (and mostly in the early 90's) but I'd love for O'Brien's to be able to provide a show spot in Allston for people to celebrate his spirit for anyone who are feeling his loss deeply.
