I know of 4, but BCN is playing hard to get today... They said all will be released Monday. Looks like the week of April 7 to 12, though.
Matthewoz - 2/28/08, 5:28 am
Certaintly Sir got snubbed last year
diddy - 2/28/08, 5:42 am

The best part about the Rumble is the band announcements. It's like reading about who got picked for the baseball team in high school.
Matthewoz - 2/28/08, 6:00 am
My favorite part of the rumble is when some really random band is in it, like the year Robbie Roadsteamer kept winning.
weth - 2/28/08, 6:01 am
It seems like the bands will be announced on Mark Hamilton's show on Sunday. Has the venue(s) been announced yet?
diddy - 2/28/08, 6:02 am
actually im not sure of the dates
Mothra - 2/28/08, 6:22 am
Matthewoz - 02/28/08 at 01:00 pm (24.56.135.82) My favorite part of the rumble is when some really random band is in it, like the year Robbie Roadsteamer kept winning. ha my boyfriend's old band won that year and spawned a fake rivalry between his band leader and robbie himself. they're all friends now. that was a great rumble.
ssg - 2/28/08, 6:24 am
Matthewoz - 02/28/08 at 12:28 pm (24.56.135.82) Certaintly Sir got snubbed last year Certainly Sir were not eligible last year, as they already played the Rumble.
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:26 am
so i guess diamond mines is not in this year either =[ last year, every preliminary round show had a band we've shared a bill with, and two of the finalists were bands we've played with a bunch. should i grow my hair longer? get a myspace spambot? pick a more pigeonhole-able genre? or i guess maybe just not post questionable sour grapes shit like this?
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:28 am
^ jeez louise who is this assho.... oh that was me =*]
diddy - 2/28/08, 6:29 am
Harpers Ferry
michael - 2/28/08, 6:30 am
fuck the rumble except if you win cause you get free stuff
brandnewbike - 2/28/08, 6:37 am
fuck music (and art) as a competition
weth - 2/28/08, 6:44 am
| If they do it they way they've done it in the past, it's Sun/Mon/Tue, break on Wed, then
Thr/Fri/Sat That would mean 4/6-8, then 4/10-12 for the Prelims. |
ssg - 2/28/08, 6:46 am
michael - 02/28/08 at 01:30 pm (98.216.152.159) fuck the rumble except if you win cause you get free stuff brandnewbike - 02/28/08 at 01:37 pm (209.113.152.82) fuck music (and art) as a competition If I could remember when I last bothered to type this in I would just copy and paste, but I can't. So here. If you think of the Rumble as a competition, or some kind of mechanism to pick the "best" band in Boston, it is of course going to be bullshit. And it's eventually going to make 23 sets of fans angry. But the Rumble is actually a lot of fun. A lot of the people that go to those shows tend to be people that care about local music. You can productively think of it as a showcase of 24 widely disparate bands usually most or all doing their different things really well. You can think of it as a chance for these bands to get seen and heard by people who might not otherwise see and hear them. You can think of it as a decent-paying gig that may randomly lead to another, better-paying gig. Nip probably put it more succinctly.
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:49 am
don't lie steve. if you lost it means youre a losing loser.
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:49 am
i didn't even get to the prelims. must mean i completely suck =[
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:50 am
two words: BOO HOO
digsensale - 2/28/08, 6:50 am
| Man, I wish they would pare down the number of bands. They could get it over with more quickly, and
also put on better quality shows for rounds 2/3. Everyone seemed spent last year after the first
round. Also, I don't think it's a competition at all in that the bands shouldn't be doing anything differently. Put on a good show. DUH |
digger - 2/28/08, 6:53 am
Also, I'm 2-0 in the past two years. Someone post the list, I'll tell you who'll win and we can all get back to business!
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 6:53 am
in all srsness i was really hoping diamond mines would be in it this year. maybe next time, our new album is gonna be crazy
Matthewoz - 2/28/08, 7:15 am
Sorry, Certainly Sir got snubbed two years ago, and Glasseye took home the kinda seems a bit like the Dresden Dolls victory in that Steamer rumble.
andeet - 2/28/08, 7:22 am
what's the point...weth is gonna win
KPH - 2/28/08, 7:28 am
Oh man, these threads. Can't wait!
the.rog - 2/28/08, 7:34 am
nip just told me that the Serious Geniuses are in it.
the.rog - 2/28/08, 7:37 am
JUST KIDDING, they're breaking up because nip hates paul.
hashshashin - 2/28/08, 7:41 am
I know for sure that we're not in it at least.
Vanya - 2/28/08, 7:43 am
Perennials should be! WTF!
nip - 2/28/08, 7:44 am
don't you have to have a release out to be?
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:44 am
ssg - 02/28/08 at 01:24 pm (170.223.185.165) Matthewoz - 02/28/08 at 12:28 pm (24.56.135.82) Certaintly Sir got snubbed last year Certainly Sir were not eligible last year, as they already played the Rumble. also, Brodeur judged one of the nights.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:46 am
| hmm, I thought maybe we might get asked because we had an album that Shred played on the local show,
but ohs wells... I'd totally do it if we were asked, even though all the judging criteria point to us not making it past the first round. |
blackchange - 2/28/08, 7:51 am
i'm gonna win the rumble this year.
hashshashin - 2/28/08, 7:52 am
Yeah none of our recordings have yet to see a "proper" release so no dice.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:52 am
Oh yeah?
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:54 am
(the oh yeah was to blackchange) well, we sent Shred a CDR version of our "properly released" vinyl LP (figuring BCN hasn't used a turntable since the 80's) so maybe he just assumed we were half-assing it with a CDR release (as if one is more legitimate than the other?)
blackchange - 2/28/08, 7:55 am
tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 02:52 pm (67.151.118.51) Oh yeah? yeah. on my own. with violence.
blackchange - 2/28/08, 7:56 am
and holograms.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:57 am
sounds magickal! can I come?
blackchange - 2/28/08, 7:58 am
you can totally tune my drumtar.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 7:59 am
sounds righteous
weth - 2/28/08, 8:01 am
tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 02:54 pm (67.151.118.51) we sent Shred a CDR Does Shred have anything to do with the Rumble anymore? He's no longer with 'BCN in any capacity, as far as I know.
blackchange - 2/28/08, 8:03 am
tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 02:59 pm (67.151.118.51) sounds righteous i think you mispelled 'stupid.'
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 8:09 am
weth - 02/28/08 at 03:01 pm (12.38.109.240) tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 02:54 pm (67.151.118.51) we sent Shred a CDR Does Shred have anything to do with the Rumble anymore? He's no longer with 'BCN in any capacity, as far as I know. O RLY? Well, regardless, the CD is in the "local" "rotation" which is what I thought was a qualifier... I'm really not worried either way. blackchange and his impeccably tuned holographic drumtar is all I need...
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 8:10 am
i'm carving failure into my stomache with a rusty envelope opener right now. DIDDY MY BLUDDZ IZ ON YR HANZ~~!
blackchange - 2/28/08, 8:13 am
tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 03:09 pm (67.151.118.51) I'm really not worried either way. blackchange and his impeccably tuned holographic drumtar is all I need... we can probably sneak one more person in inside the bass drum if anyone else is into it.
nip - 2/28/08, 8:15 am
god i can't believe martin is crying about the rumble
Matthewoz - 2/28/08, 8:15 am
Who does the BCN Sunday night local show now?
beenwiser - 2/28/08, 8:18 am
nip - 02/28/08 at 03:15 pm (209.113.251.34) god i can't believe martin is crying about the rumble not surprised by me tho =/
icehockeyhair - 2/28/08, 8:31 am
BCN had a turntable in the studio as recently as 2001... maybe even later that that, but i wasn't there. they'd occasionally break it out when they'd play some classic rock at lunchtime.
nip - 2/28/08, 8:33 am
been: hey man.. you know.. and egg and its shell and all that.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 8:47 am
I'M JUST REALLY UPSET AND zzz...
blackchange - 2/28/08, 8:50 am
martin actually told me that, at practice, we're not even gonna play. it's just gonna be his weeping self and his weeping guitar weeping about bullshit. it's apparently a tissues optional practice, which i found to be weird a little.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 8:53 am
you know, man, they call 'em PRIVATE messages for a reason... JEEEZ
weth - 2/28/08, 8:56 am
Matthewoz - 02/28/08 at 03:15 pm (24.56.135.82) Who does the BCN Sunday night local show now? I believe Mark Hamilton is now the regular DJ for Boston Emissions.
blackchange - 2/28/08, 8:57 am
whatever, niagara falls.
ac - 2/28/08, 8:58 am
hmm mmm los has never been asked either. i mean, we put out a record over a year ago. should we be offended? eh, probably not.
Mothra - 2/28/08, 9:01 am
Matthewoz - 02/28/08 at 02:15 pm (24.56.135.82) Sorry, Certainly Sir got snubbed two years ago, and Glasseye took home the kinda seems a bit like the Dresden Dolls victory in that Steamer rumble. glasseye took the "we killed onstage" victory. doesn't matter if they have a dresden dolls feel, they were one of the strongest bands in the rumble that year and the judges agreed.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 9:07 am
yeah, I'm not sure how C,s got "snubbed" did they win more points or something?
djd - 2/28/08, 9:11 am
| List of past
competitors. I have a crazy fondness for handicapping the Rumble. I'd wager that if the following acts aren't on the list, it's because they said no: Sarah Borges Everyday Visuals HtH Tulsa White Hinterlands I'm really not up on minor punk bands or the 508 scene, so I can't guess those slots. |
Vanya - 2/28/08, 9:14 am
None of them are on the list I have.
tinobeat - 2/28/08, 9:14 am
LOL at the "508 scene"
blackchange - 2/28/08, 9:15 am
Vanya - 02/28/08 at 04:14 pm (216.183.191.226) None of them are on the list I have. OH SNAP

blackchange - 2/28/08, 9:21 am
tinobeat - 02/28/08 at 04:14 pm (67.151.118.51) LOL at the "508 scene" THIS YEAR'S RUMBLE NEEDS MORE BASKETBALL JERSEYS
Matthewoz - 2/28/08, 9:28 am
I like that Burma was in the Rumble years and years ago.
diddy - 2/28/08, 10:21 am
| I have a crazy fondness for handicapping the Rumble. I'd wager that if the following acts aren't on
the list, it's because they said no: Sarah Borges Everyday Visuals HtH Tulsa White Hinterlands you would win $$ |
gregmaxwell - 2/28/08, 11:19 am
last year was kind of fun some nights! i had more fun on the nights i had nothing to do with.
ssg - 2/28/08, 11:39 am
A.K.A.C.O.D. are in this year. I don't work for anybody who cares if I reveal this.
Mothra - 2/28/08, 11:59 am

Herald...today...
brokenfuses - 2/29/08, 10:32 am

ssg - 2/29/08, 12:26 pm
Looks like a decent lineup, if the Herald and username: Vanya are to be believed. Plenty of bands I've heard of but never checked out, which is sort of what the Rumble is good for. I'm disappointed that I'll have to miss Me and Joan Collins's prelim set—I'll be travelling back from San Diego that night—but I can always hope to root for them in the semis.

tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:22 am
| Weird. While I knew like every band last year, I've only heard maybe 3 of these bands and have heard
*of* maybe a little less than half. That's awesome that Disappearer is playing, but unless the criteria (or the band) have changed, they're not gonna do so great in the "vocals" scoring category, right? |
brokenfuses - 3/3/08, 4:24 am
Disappearer have vocals now.
tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:29 am
ah, that's the ticket. I haven't heard them in a long-ass time.
davidlopan - 3/3/08, 4:31 am
what
blackchange - 3/3/08, 4:31 am
sweet that's a lot of shows i won't go to.
davidlopan - 3/3/08, 4:35 am
we should have an AFL style counter-rumble and have that winner challenge the BCN rumble winner.
Mothra - 3/3/08, 4:36 am
blackchange - 03/03/08 at 11:31 am (18.178.0.246) sweet that's a lot of shows i won't go to.
tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:37 am
yeah, blackchange - 03/03/08 at 11:31 am (18.178.0.246) sweet that's a lot of shows i won't go to.
blackchange - 3/3/08, 4:38 am
ages ago we had this idea to do a week of rumble-esque shows where 4 bands played in each corner of the room. then at the end the winner was decided by placing a puppy in the center of the room and seeing what band he ran towards first. still need to do this at some point, except maybe with a chimp in a leisure suit.
diddy - 3/3/08, 4:39 am
fogot to mention the guest band this year is THE NEIGHBORHOODS
tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:40 am
who?
blackchange - 3/3/08, 4:43 am
tinobeat - 03/03/08 at 11:40 am (67.151.118.51) who? old powerpop kinda band from here. they've been playing a fair bit recently.
ryantheterrible - 3/3/08, 4:44 am
eric law just put out a 7" on his label if i am thinking straight.
tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:47 am
ah, I see. I'm all outta touch with all kindsa stuff. I should start making my way back to Russia...
Mothra - 3/3/08, 4:47 am
eric law is on like everyone's guestlists at the abbey ever.
blackchange - 3/3/08, 4:50 am
tinobeat - 03/03/08 at 11:47 am (67.151.118.51) ah, I see. I'm all outta touch with all kindsa stuff. I should start making my way back to Russia... not so much out of touch. they had a handful of decent songs and a lot of meh kinda stuff. old people that like to tell you about how the old days were much better love that fucking band. i saw them in new york last year and they were sweet, but it was one of those "just the old stuff" sets. but seriously, get the fuck out of here, comradical.
tinobeat - 3/3/08, 4:55 am
haha...
diddy - 3/3/08, 7:41 am
any other predictions?
hashshashin - 3/3/08, 7:44 am
I have high hopes for Disapearer and Wild Zero but predict good things for Humanwine and Medicated Kisses.
digsensale - 3/3/08, 7:44 am
I think we've got it all figured out. I think we should instead look at the band names and decide who will be the worst...
neogonzo - 3/3/08, 7:48 am
i know i should really not make any jokes about bands i've never seen or heard or anything, but........... actually, i'm going to go ahead and "or don't" on this one. i can say that last year i at least pretended to care about these shows, but like tino i am also slightly out of touch and i don't know most of these bands, and the ones i do, i know i don't really like. anyhow... i've effectively said nothing.

WSJRaff - 3/3/08, 7:51 am
I guess I'm not alone in not knowing a lot of those bands. I figured maybe it was just because I'm relatively new to the scene.
blackchange - 3/3/08, 7:52 am
you're a different breed of gentleman, sir.
Icarus - 3/3/08, 7:53 am
Band names. They ain't so good.
ssg - 3/3/08, 7:54 am
There is not one cohesive "Boston music scene." There are more like a dozen. The organizers of the Rumble have always done a fairly admirable job of cherry-picking bands that are both quality and representative from a broad swath of Boston music. So it's very rare for any one musician or music fan to know a large fraction of the bands playing in any given Rumble, unless you somehow frequent shows in all those scenes.
WSJRaff - 3/3/08, 7:55 am
Good point.
digger - 3/3/08, 7:56 am
What about guys like us, though, ssg? I was pretty confident in knowing last year's roster, but most of these guys... hmmm
hashshashin - 3/3/08, 7:56 am
Worst bands based on name alone: "Forgetful Jones" and "Cherry S/T"
digsensale - 3/3/08, 7:57 am
What about Dirt Mall, hash?
hashshashin - 3/3/08, 8:02 am

ryantheterrible - 3/3/08, 8:05 am

I think April 8 belongs to HUMANWINE anyway...
brokenfuses - 3/3/08, 8:09 am
Girls, Guns and Glory are one strong band. I think they'll go far.
ssg - 3/3/08, 8:12 am
I don't know about you, digger, but there are lots of scenes that I am not up on. I don't follow hardcore, or Celtic punk, or ska, or Berklee stuff, or 'AAF/Goodtimes Emporium-style mini-arena metal at all, really. I've drifted away from the garage rock in recent years, and it doesn't take much roots/Americana to satisfy any cravings I might occasionally have in that direction. And I'm kind of woefully ignorant about Boston hip-hop.
digger - 3/3/08, 8:13 am
I'm kind of a man for all seasons, SSG. Last year I felt like I knew at least 2/4 bands each night. This is like, far below that
Matthewoz - 3/3/08, 8:14 am
This years roster is wierd to me... I know 5 or 6 bands very well, but after that it drops off. Scene or no scene, I usually know about 3/4ths of the bands, for better or worse.

there's some very good bands on that lineup, but i can't help but feel that it's a mis-representation of the local scene because there's so many great (eligible) bands missing. also, there's a few bands on there who are very new - generally bands put out a full length album before they play the rumble, and to my knowledge the Murder Mile, Me & Joan Collins, The Men, Medicated Kisses, Jason Bennett and probably a few others only have EP's or singles.
Bridget - 3/3/08, 12:28 pm
I know I'm biased but I think the Shills will do well. I don't think they will win because i want them to therefore they will not. My well wishes are death to any band unfortunately I feel.
R.Schwarzkogler - 3/3/08, 12:34 pm
I call Girls, Guns, and Glory to win.

icehockeyhair - 03/03/08 at 06:33 pm (216.174.127.57) generally bands put out a full length album before they play the rumble, well, Township only had an EP when they won (and others had less, if I recall)...

the.rog - 4/22/08, 10:29 am
who or what is the Great Bandini?
ssg - 4/22/08, 10:30 am
Scott Janovitz (ex-Cold Water Flat, and a Janovitz), Eric Barlow (ex-Quick Fix), the drummer from The Pills, and a bassist I didn't recognize. Bit of a supergroup there, but then, so's AKACOD.
diddy - 4/24/08, 9:52 am
friday ...any predicitions?
digger - 4/24/08, 9:55 am
GGG will whoop and holler their way past the vampiric AKACOD as long as they don't slow down. AKACOD is too subtle for this crowd. The Great Bandini, for all their excellent vocal harmonies, will conduct a vanishing act
ssg - 4/24/08, 10:04 am
Given how often you've been right, CD, this may be the final nail in the coffin of there being any chance of me attending the finals. GGG are good at what they do, but I find them pretty intolerable, and I'd be really bummed to be present when they were announced the winners over AKACOD and The Great Bandini.
