| I've been meaning to do one of these, so, here goes. IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW Dr. John's Gumbo I've been playing this one at least twice a day lately and I figured I'd put it up in lieu of this beautiful day. He's taken all the aspects of New Orleans (songs and sounds) and rolled together into, what I think to be, his most accessable album. This is, front to back, a perfect record for a beautiful day of drinking and bbq. The order may have gotten messed up, so here is the track listing. 1.Iko Iko 2. Blow Wind Blow 3. Big Chief 4. Somebody Changed The Lock 5. Mess Around 6. Let The Good Times Roll 7. Junko Partner 8. Stack-A-Lee 9. Tipitina 10. Those Lonely Lonely Nights 11. Huey Smith Medley: High Blood Pressure/Don't You Just Know It/Well I'll Be John Brown 12. Little Liza Jane |

- CLICK TO VIEW Punch Drunk Love OST This album, done by Jon Brion, is beautiful. The strings sound like heaven. It's quirky and warm and if you're familiar with the movie, this is the perfect audio interpretation of the stunning colors and cut sequences. |

| Is that the Dr. John record with the Dudley Perkins sample on it? Also, that Jon Brion soundtrack is SO FUCKING GOOD. |
| Harpo - 05/26/07 - 1:03 pm (24.34.50.237) |
| There's no sampling on it, it's more straight forward then his records before this one. No drug induced run ons, not that those were bad, but it's more of a solid New Orleans piano blues record. The cover of Tipitina by Prof. Longhair kills. |
| Harpo - 05/26/07 - 1:50 pm (24.34.50.237) |
| <img src=" Leonard Cohen-Songs of Love and Hate A word that comes to mind instantly when I listen to this record is "stark". I'm sure most people have this already, but It's so important that I wanted to put it up.....just in case. His imagery is chilling, his delivery nonchalant and his self reflection, unforgiving. Sometimes this album is down right scary. As far as lyrics go, he's probably one of my favorites. Also, there is some great fingerpicking on a few of these tracks. |
| Harpo - 05/26/07 - 1:51 pm (24.34.50.237) |
| Fuck. I didn't mean to send that yet. |

| Nah, Dudley Perkins is like a hip hopish thing from a couple years ago. I think they sampled Dr. John but I forget which track. Thanks for the tunes. |
| Harpo - 05/26/07 - 2:00 pm (24.34.50.237) |

VIEW Count Basie at Newport In 1957, Count Basie played the Newport Folk Festival with an all-star lineup. It was a mix of his, then current, cast (featuring Joe Williams and his BOOMING voice) and musicians that played for him over the course 30+ years before(Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Rushing). You can hear these dudes having a blast on stage and just toying with Basie's intricately woven horn lines. I love this record. Highlight: Blee Blop Blues 1. Intro - John Hammond 2. Swingin' At The Newport - Ernie Wilkins 3. Polka Dots and Moonbeams - Johnny Burke& Jimmy Van Heusen 4. Lester Leaps In - Lester Young 5. Sent For You Yesterday And Here You Come Today - Count Basie 6. Boogie Woogie I May Be Wrong - Count Basie 7. Evenin' - Count Basie 8. Blee Blop Blues - Count Basie 9. Alright, Okay, You Win - Sidney Wyche 10. The Comeback - Frazier 11. Roll 'em Pete - Joe Turner& Pete Johnson 12. Smack Dab In The Middle - Charles Calhoun 13. One O'clock Jump - Count Basie |

VIEW Orange Twin Field Works Vol 1. Jeff Mangum (from Neutral Milk Hotel) in Bulgeria with a field mic traveling to different folk festivals, walking the streets, recording everything around him and piecing it all together into a gorgeous 25 or so minute soundscape. There are points of this album that are just hypnotizing. From the Orange Twin site: Orange Twin Field Works Vol. I is a series of musical doors and paths taking you into areas of Bulgaria and the surrounding regions. Recorded and edited by Jeff Mangum, these recordings amazingly transform the listener into feeling as if he or she were on site watching celebrators march down the streets in suits made of bells or winding thru crowds to hear angelic harmonies rising in the distance. The songs are all traditional to the areas in and around Bulgaria and performed by an array of local talent. |

CLICK TO VIEW Ray Charles-Live This is one of my favorites ever. It's a mix of two concerts...one from the Newport Folk Festival on July 5th, 1958 and one from Atlanta, Georgia on May 28, 1959. This record allows you to hear his songs as they were intended; not toned or cut short for the radio. It also contains some of his jazz work, which is incredible. I didn't know, until I bought this record, that he plays Alto sax....and really well at that. My favorite track: Fool for You. |

| This is a record called Chaotica by a guy named Tom Recchion, I just stumbled upon this dude the
other day. Really good ambient recordings. On his aptly titled 1996 Birdman release, Chaotica (actually recorded in 1985-6), Recchion uses prerecorded tape loops, keyboards, and effects to turn exotica into something positively otherworldly. The results are deliciously and dizzyingly strange: this is the music you'd expect to hear in the tiki bar of a 22nd century space station. Since crafting chaotica isn't exactly lucrative, Recchion's bread and butter over the years has been designing album covers. He has created art for an incredibly eclectic group of artists, including American Music Club, Jane's Addiction, R. Kelly, Alanis Morissette, Prince, R.E.M., Joshua Redman, and Jonathan Richman. Recchion is also involved in Extended Organ, a radical free music project which also features fellow LAFMS alum Fredrik Nilsen. -Jesse Ashlock-Epitonic.com IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW Pt.1 Pt.2 Tom Recchion has been a artist/composer/art director in Southern California since the 1970’s. He is the co-creator of the legendary Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). At the time he discarded object making (though he employs it now) and concentrated on the ephemeral nature of sound. His early practice in low-tech sonic exploration presaged many of the genres exciting developments of the last quarter century: record manipulation, live tape loops, free improvisation, found and invented instruments, installation, and more. |

REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW Katamari Damacy The music in Katamari Damacy was widely hailed as imaginative and original (winning both IGN's[3] and GameSpot's[4] "Soundtrack of the Year 2004" awards), and was considered one of its best features. The soundtrack was released in Japan as Katamari Fortissimo Damashii. Its eclectic composition featured elements of traditional electronic video game music, as well as heavy jazz and samba influences (Shibuya-kei). Most of the tracks were composed by Yu Miyake, and many of the tracks feature vocals from popular J-pop singers such as Yui Asaka from the Sukeban Deka 3 TV series, a vocal sung and written by Charlie Kosei, composer of the Lupin III soundtrack, and anime voice actors, including Nobue Matsubara and Ado Mizumori. -Wikipedia |

| One more for tonight. This man's voice is very beautiful. Haunting and etheral. IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW An Evening with John Jacob Niles John Jacob Niles (b. Louisville, Kentucky, April 28, 1892; d. Lexington, Kentucky, March 1, 1980) was an American composer, singer, and collector of traditional ballads. Called the "Dean of American Balladeers"[1], Niles was an important influence on the American folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, with Joan Baez, Burl Ives, and Peter, Paul and Mary, among others, recording his songs. Niles learned music theory from his mother, and began writing down folk music as a teenager. He became a serious student of Appalachian folk music by transcribing traditional songs from oral sources while an itinerant employee of the Burroughs Corporation in eastern Kentucky, from 1910 to 1917. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I, in which he was injured, he studied music in France, first in Lyon, then in Paris at the Schola Cantorum, also meeting Gertrude Stein. Returning to the United States in 1920, he continued his studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He sang opera in Chicago and folk songs on early radio. In 1925, he moved to New York City and held various jobs in the entertainment industry. In the 1930s, he toured Europe and the United States with contralto Marion Kerby. He performed at the White House in 1938, and on occasion at the Newport Folk Festival during the 1950s. In the 1920s, Niles began publishing music. He made four extended trips into the southern Appalachians as an assistant to photographer Doris Ulmann, again transcribing traditional songs from oral sources, including the ballads "Pretty Polly" and "Barbara Allen." On other occasions, he transcribed songs he heard sung by African Americans and by fellow soldiers in World War I. Niles is also a noted songwriter. His songs, many of which are based on traditional sources, include "Venezuela," "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," and the haunting Christmas song "I Wonder As I Wander." Henry Miller's Plexus includes a powerful tribute to Niles's recording of this song. Niles composed "Go 'Way From My Window" when he was a mere 16 years old, but did not perform it until 1930. Marlene Dietrich recorded it and sang it on stage. Bob Dylan quoted its first line in his song "It Ain't Me Babe." Later in life, Niles published compositions in a more classical style, including works for choir and art songs for voice and piano. The latter include his last work, a setting of poems by Thomas Merton. Starting in 1938, he recorded a number of his compositions and transcribed songs, performing the material in an intense, dramatic manner. He employed a trademark very high falsetto to portray female characters, and often accompanied himself on an Appalachian dulcimer, lute, or other plucked stringed instrument. In 1936, he married Rena Lipetz. They settled on the Boot Hill farm in Clark County, Kentucky, where they spent the rest of their lives. He is buried at the nearby St. Hubert's Episcopal Church. The John Jacob Niles Center for American Music at the University of Kentucky is named after him, and displays a number of traditional instruments he handcrafted.-Wikipedia |

- CLICK TO VIEW "The second release in Mickey Hart's Endangered Music Project captures the shimmering music of Indonesia as it existed in 1941, when the Fahnestock brothers set sail to record the indigenous musics of Bali, Java, Madura and Arjasa with state-of-the-art Presto disc-cutters. This collection is an extraordinary achievement in the restoration of deteriorating cellulose-acetate discs, and in the preservation of the elegant and haunting cultural traditions of the Indonesian archipelago prior to its westernization in WWII. Music accompanies all aspects of Indonesian life -- the work of farmers, the play of children, royal ceremony, theaters, or rituals of birth and death. The most important form is the gamelan, ensembles dominated by magnificent bronze gongs and metallophones ( bronze-keyed xylophones). The gamelan is characterized by what might be called a sacred geometry -- everything from the number of beats to the arrangement and design of the instruments adheres to a precise symmetry and cosmology, reflective of a worldview rooted in Hindu Buddhism. In contrast to the driving energy of the large gamelan ensembles are simple and gentle performances featuring haunting voices, bamboo flutes and reed instruments, and one featuring nothing more than an Indonesian Jew's harp played by a young girl. And there is the legendary kecak, or Monkey Dance, the complex counterpoint of interlocking chants by a two-hundred man chorus, building to a kind of ecstatic, otherworldly frenzy. These recordings provide a window on a world radically different from our own -- one which has been changed almost beyond recognition in the intervening years. But thanks to the Endangered Music Project -- and above all to the heroic efforts of Bruce and Sheridan Fahnestock -- this MUSIC FOR THE GODS will resonate through the ages." CLICK TO VIEW Lullabye Arkestra are a bass-and-drum vocal duo that is, in practicality, anything but. Drummer Justin Small (from Do Make Say Think), and bassist Katia Taylor are Canadian soulsters who understand what deep distortion-drenched soul music is all about. This is deep white Canadian soul that packs a wallop -- especially when considered in light of the pair adding a three-piece horn section, a Hammond B-3, and a violin that is sometimes overdubbed to sound like a string section. Taylor can sing like a midnight gutter canary who has heard the intensities of both Carla Thomas and Otis Redding, but doesn't have the vocal chops necessary to pull that off, so she relies on pure guts, piss, and vinegar. With Small's less overwrought singing style (though he gets to needle-in-the-red gospel shout levels as well -- and makes Jack White doing the same thing sound like he's wearing a sterile lab coat), the duo pulls it off just fine, though the Lullabye Arkestra sound like a bar band in a horror film more than a Goldwax soul singles act. But the soul thang isn't the only trick in the band's fanny pack. They know how to roll with the lounge blues, the swampy nocturnal whelping torch songs from the dark night of the soul, dope-fiend circus music, and humid, sex-starved love ballads. The best tunes here are "Y'Make Me Shake" with its roiling-boil bass throb, "All I Can Give Ya," and "Ass Worship." ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide Lullabye Arkestra-Ampgrave |

The sound quality is fuzzy, but given how little Drake recorded before his death, and how absolutely no unreleased material exists other than the four CDs included on his Fruit Tree box set, this is a Holy Grail (or at least a silver goblet) of sorts for Drake fanatics. Most of the material is in a far more traditional acoustic folk and blues vein than his official releases, which show a big leap in both songwriting maturity and instrumental sophistication. Here Nick sounds much like very early (acoustic) Donovan, covering traditional folk songs, "Summertime," "Get Together," and early Dylan; his originals are often quite derivative of these influences (and several compositions credited to Drake on the liner notes are in fact covers, or extremely derivative of existing standards). The best cuts -- "Winter Is Gone," "The Reason of the Seasons," "To the Garden" -- show the emergence of a more idiosyncratic talent. Minor complaints: four songs from the original tape are missing (two do appear on Fruit Tree), and some entertaining between-song banter has been eliminated. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide" Nick Drake-Tanworth In Arden |

VIEW "One of the most interesting and enigmatic cult figures of 1960s folk, Jackson Frank's reputation rests almost solely upon one hard-to-find album from the mid-'60s. A stronger composer than a singer, he nonetheless had an appreciable influence on many more famous performers of the decade, including Paul Simon, Sandy Denny, and Nick Drake.Trauma and misfortune have dogged Frank throughout his life. At the age of 11, a fire in his elementary school killed many of his classmates, and left him with burns over most of his body. He eventually recovered and learned to play the guitar, and hung around the early-'60s New York coffeehouse scene with John Kay, later of Steppenwolf. A large insurance settlement enabled him to travel to England after he turned 21, and it was there that he made most of his impact.Frank shared a London flat with fellow American expatriates Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who were briefly based there in the mid-'60s prior to their first hit, "The Sounds of Silence." Simon, then a struggling folk singer/songwriter himself, was impressed enough to produce Frank's self-titled album, released in the U.K. only. While Frank's voice was tremulously earnest, the quality of the compositions was often impressive, with a reflective, melancholic air that most likely influenced Simon, Al Stewart (who made his recording debut on one of the LP's tracks, "Yellow Walls"), and Nick Drake (who covered one of the songs, "Here Come the Blues," on late-'60s home tapes that have been extensively circulated as a bootleg).Frank's album was well-received in British folk circles, and several of his songs made their way into the repertoire of his friend Sandy Denny, who recorded a couple, "Milk and Honey" and "You Never Wanted Me," on her own debut LP. (She also recorded a version of "You Never Wanted Me" with Fairport Convention, and a 1966 demo of "Blues Run the Game" appears on her Dark the Night bootleg.) Frank, however, was unable to come up with a similar quality of material for a follow-up. This, combined with stage fright, depression, and an end of the funds from the insurance setttlement that had enabled him to travel in high style, meant that he returned to the States in 1969 without releasing another album.Based in Woodstock, NY, Frank continued his songwriting, but family and depression problems resulted in homelessness by the mid-'70s. For most of the next two decades, Frank lived on the streets or hospitals, too discouraged to contact old friends and family. He was further hobbled by arthritis, inappropriate medication for his mental problems, and a shooting incident that left him legally blind in his left eye. In the mid-'90s, a sympathetic folk fan, Jim Abbott, helped Frank regroup from his setbacks by helping him gain more appropriate medical assistance and settle back in Woodstock, where he resumed songwriting, and occasionally performs. A 1995 profile in Dirty Linen magazine effectively "rediscovered" the missing legend, and legendary vintage recordings were finally issued on CD in 1996. Adkins developed a passion for music from listening to the radio as a boy; one day, after hearing a Hank Williams record, Adkins struck upon the notion that since no one else was credited, Williams must have played all the instruments himself, and while in time he learned that wasn't the case, he had already begun teaching himself to perform as a one-man band, using foot pedals to play the drums while using his hands to rock out on guitar. While Adkins' roots were in country music, when rock & roll hit in the mid-'50s, he took to it like a duck to water, and after putting together a primitive home-recording setup, he began committing his own rockabilly songs to tape. However, it soon became obvious that Adkins' lyrical perspective wasn't what most folks were accustomed to -- he wrote a number of songs about a lascivious but nonexistent dance craze called "the Hunch," recorded another tune about eating peanut butter on the moon, and in one of his best-known songs, "She Said," he compared the woman of his affections to "a dying can of that commodity meat." While a few small regional labels released singles by Hasil in the late '50s and early '60s, and he headed to California in search of stardom, the world wasn't ready for his crazed vision, and Adkins ended up back in Madison, continuing to make his music in local honky tonks and for the benefit of his tape recorder. As the '60s turned into the '70s, Adkins began to alternate rockabilly with country weepers, though even his more placid material still bore his emotionally charged trademark. Adkins self-released several country sides in the 1970s, and as was his habit he always mailed a copy of each record to the sitting president of the United States; as a result, Hasil actually received a thank-you letter from Richard M. Nixon. In the late '70s, Billy Miller and Miriam Linna -- co-editors of Kicks magazine, members of the bands the Zantees and the A-Bones, and historians of various forms of raw, untamed music -- discovered a copy of Adkins' rare "She Said" single, and were immediately struck by its one of a kind sound and intensity. (Their enthusiasm was shared by Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of the Cramps, who cut "She Said" as the B-side of a single in 1981.) Miller and Linna tracked down Adkins, and discovered there was a lot more musical insanity where that 45 came from; they were enthusiastic enough to compile an album's worth of Hasil's home recordings from the 1950s and '60s, and 1986's Out to Hunch became the first album from their new record label, Norton Records. Featuring "She Said," "The Hunch," and three different songs about gals having their heads chopped off, Out to Hunch became an underground success, and a year later Miller and Linna brought Hasil to New York City to play a few live shows and record his first session in a proper studio, which became the album The Wild Man. Adkins was a now a bona fide cult hero, and began touring regularly and releasing further albums, though his prodigious consumption of alcohol, coffee, and cigarettes (as well as his obsessive fondness for red meat) did little to make the middle-aged rocker a stable and reliable presence; stories of crazed shows, tossed guitars, and boozy antics loom large in the Adkins legend, as do tales of his primitive existence in West Virginia, where he was said to go fishing while watching Wheel of Fortune on TV through the magic of extension cords. In the early '90s, Adkins signed a deal with I.R.S. Records, but the label folded before they could release the album he made for them; Hasil had a more positive experience with the Mississippi blues label Fat Possum, which not only recorded and released 1999's What the Hell Was I Thinking?, but put Adkins on the road as part of a package tour with T-Model Ford and Elmo Williams. In 2000, Hasil returned to Norton with the release of Poultry in Motion, which compiled six new recordings with eight vintage tracks, all of which concerned Hasil's favorite dish, chicken. Sadly, these proved to be the last new Hasil Adkins recordings released in his lifetime; the wild man was found dead in his Madison home on April 26, 2005. The compilation Best of the Haze followed in 2006."-allmusic |

Adam Forkner's White Rainbow project began with CD-Rs and soon evolved into multimedia installation pieces. White Rainbow's Kranky debut, Prism of Eternal Now, shows off the spectrum of Forkner's music, which occupies a blissful space somewhere between dream pop, drum circles, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde electronics. The album warms up with some relatively brief tracks: "Middle" sets Forkner's distorted vocals adrift on a shimmering sea of electronics, while the aptly named opener, "Pulses," layers yipping, tablas, a heavy synth bass straight out of '70s prog, and a lysergic guitar solo, proving that as transcendent as White Rainbow's music may be, it isn't always gentle. Likewise, the Terry Riley-inspired "For Terry" boasts some strangely feral electronic squeals, and "Mystic Prism"'s relentless bassline adds an ever-so-slightly ominous edge to its beauty. As Prism of Eternal Now unfolds, it gets more elongated and abstract, displaying Forkner's skill with setting moods and shaping atmospheres. "April 25 11:14 PM" and "Awakening"'s viscous electronic textures underscore Forkner's ties to Portland's other sonic wanderers, including Valet and Jackie-O Motherfucker. "Warm Clicked Fruit" may be Prism of Eternal Now's definitive track, its melody and whispery percussion ebbing and flowing like heartbeats and breathing, or breezes and rippling water, in a perfectly balanced blend of acoustics and electronics. Tribal yet modern, intricate yet spacious, this is White Rainbow's most accessible work. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide White Rainbow-Zome |
| Harpo - 06/02/08 - 4:35 pm (24.60.183.36) |
| oops. Pasted the wrong description RE:Zome: White Rainbow recorded a respectable disc of ambient music on Zome, released about two years (in November 2005) after it was recorded (in October 2003). Comprised of just four tracks, it was at times tangentially related to songs and rock music, and at others drifted into wholly instrumental electronic-dominated territory. The mood on the opening selection, "Gilded Golden Ladies," is languid and mellow with an electronic sheen, the vocals functioning more as ornamental elements than features on which to focus. The material gets less conventional as the disc progresses, at times skirting the space rock of a band such as 1970s Pink Floyd, but with a more placid, serenely passive ambience in its combination of crystalline reverbed guitar, basic keyboard riffs, and electronic skitters. The closing title cut, which at 20 minutes takes up about half the album, gets into more electronic, intelligent new age-ish territory, with spacious decaying and overlapping tones establishing an atmosphere of consistent but always-slightly-varying calm. Toward the final part, there's a mild buildup in tension as more parts are added and intersect, and gaps between the repetitions of notes become shorter and shorter. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide [-] Collapse |
