curly hair thread - how do i not wash my hair?

meaghan - 6/2/09, 4:41 pm
so in these rough ecomonic times i need to chill on washing my hair. i look like something that a huge cat coughed up. i hear all this talk about curly haireds not needing to wash everyday, but how do i do that without looking like a hobo. do i rinse? rinse and condition? should i just quit my job right now?

love,

meaghan

just relax. WHATEVER.
meaghan - 6/2/09, 4:43 pm
I'M TRYIN, MAN
Mothra - 6/2/09, 4:47 pm
rinse and condition. Your hair will be greasy for a bit but eventually balance out naturally with the oils your body creates. You shouldn't shampoo everyday. It's actually very bad for hair.
JoeB - 6/2/09, 4:48 pm
you're probably not smoking enough weed
kthrn - 6/2/09, 4:49 pm
you should NOT be washing your hair everyday if you have curly hair.
kthrn - 6/2/09, 4:49 pm
and what mothra said.

I was my bangs every day because they absorb forehead grease. this is a true statement.

but yeah otherwise rinse and condition and be one with oil and not care or some bullshit
meaghan - 6/2/09, 5:00 pm
yeah the bangs are the thing i'm worried about, but just washing them and not the rest of my head is a genius idea
jonleonard - 6/2/09, 5:01 pm
I just rinse. I don't wash mine every day.
tigerdriver - 6/2/09, 5:01 pm
darlin don't you go and wash your hair
Aviatrix - 6/2/09, 5:01 pm
maybe if I wasn't so vain and grossed out by my own greasy bangs the oil situation would even itself out after a while, but here we are
athena - 6/2/09, 5:02 pm
i am too lazy and forgetful to groom properly but when i remember and feel like i need to clean my hairs i use baking soda + apple cider vinegar
bsullivan - 6/2/09, 5:04 pm
I wash my hair once a week, maybe.
lauren - 6/2/09, 5:08 pm
i don't wash my hair anymore (and i don't even have curly hair).
eventually it works out.
tombrady617 - 6/2/09, 5:11 pm
I wash my hair everyday even though I know it's bad for it.. my hair is thin and looks yucky after 1 day of not washing it.
katharine - 6/2/09, 5:13 pm
man i wash my hair every 2 weeks MAYBE. i occasionally wash my bangs in between if they get haggard or if i get really sweaty. i cant imagine having to wash my hair every day ugh

my wife has curly hair and she hasnt washed it with shampoo in like 3 or 4 years, it looks nice i am not kidding!
evanparker - 6/2/09, 5:16 pm
your wife?
kayla - 6/2/09, 5:16 pm
i wash my hair like twice a week. but only cause with all these curls it gets really tangly. how do i stop it from getting all tangled? even if i wear it straight, after like 2-3 days of not washing it gets curly and starts getting all tangled. maybe thats because i also dont rinse or condition on those days? i just dont like to do things of the sort all that often. cause im lazy.
tombrady617 - 6/2/09, 5:17 pm
you can use leave-in detangler in the morning
TheLustyGhost - 6/2/09, 5:19 pm
Put a bangin' donk on it.
kayla - 6/2/09, 5:20 pm
that stuff really works? i used to use it when i was little, cause i would often get gigantic knots in my hair from only wearing a low pony tail. once i had to get them cut out, and i had these weird little pieces underneath my ponytail. i started a trend.

I think curly haired people were better off not washing their hair. My mom always raves about some "Curly Girl System" that some hair dresser invented. You should look it up somewhere. It involves not shampooing your hair, LITERALLY NEVER. And washing your hair with conditioner mixed with leman juice extract. Then don't towel dry but wrap a t-shirt over your head to soak up the water. After that just air dry and you hair will look awesome. Ask Diane, both my mom and sister use this method and they have curly as hell hair and it's always really nice! PM me, I could send you pictorial proof.
meaghan - 6/2/09, 5:36 pm
crazy!

maybe i should start science experimenting with my hair. do you think i can wash my hair with diet coke?

my hair takes so much work its absurd
ask anybody
a. vo5 hot oil now and then. its cheap, in a bottle bad for the environment, smells terrible and works really well

dont forget the baby powder blowdryer trick if its looking too not hip just too greasy -aviatrix this will save you. baby powder of dry hair, then blowdry. try it.

also listen the kthrn her hair is like stunning

athena you are such a domestic goddess apple cider vinegar 4everything

mothra is posting again!

leman

danny i feel like leman would make me look like a wookie

kayla always brush from the bottom up not the bottom down, sleep with it in two braids. no tangles.

also when i had dreads and didnt want to shave my head and tried to brush them out we conditioned with a shitload of jojoba oil that stuff was really helpful until it all fell off anyway...
level60JIZZARD - 6/2/09, 9:03 pm
oh walter's screaming avocado tell them avocado (he's a lurker)
so, try avocado as a conditioner maybe he's saying?

don't wash more than 4 times a week max, previous list suggestions still stand
level60JIZZARD - 6/2/09, 9:04 pm
also everyone should be using a wide tooth comb, this will cause less breaking and less frizzies
kayla - 6/2/09, 9:08 pm
wait, has your name always been level60jizzard or was it at one point wizard? have i just been misreading this whole time and missing an awesome thing?!
jonleonard - 6/2/09, 9:09 pm
Man, if my hair were as much work as some of y'alls hair, I would just buzz it.

You are like me though and grow hair mad fast, right?
barker - 6/2/09, 11:06 pm
MY HAIR IS BANGING THESE DAYS
i wash my hair every 10 days. no conditioner. if it's not greasy enuff.............
work/play/try harder

stay away from extreme sun and heat and humidity
tone666 - 6/2/09, 11:21 pm
i agree. it seems as though youre not smoking enough weed.
ellehcim - 6/2/09, 11:29 pm
i haven't had long hair in forever and i have no idea what to do with it. my bangs are kinda heavy and overgrown and they go from a puff to a weird greasy swish over the course of like two days, which then prompts me to shower and generally wash my hair. if i don't, it looks like shit after lunch. when my hair was shorter, i'd wash it like a couple times a week.

halp.
RyanMcGinty - 6/3/09, 3:52 am
i would like to see some motherfucking peer-reviewed scientific journal articles that shampoo is bad for your hair.
until then i am going to have clean hair
clara - 6/3/09, 3:58 am
-apple cider vinegar is good for making your hair shiny and nice and also helps with dandruff
-lemon does a similar thing but can lighten your hair
-sleeping with braids always makes mine more tangled (but mine's straight)

if anyone is interested we have a rad "natural hair care" comic zine at papercut. it's from the 70's. it gives the best instructions for a 70's haircut.
bitter_almond - 6/3/09, 4:09 am
afro-pik mandatory.

ryan there's a reason that wigs don't come from american hair.
that being said, the really expensive brands probably aren't too bad. if you don't mind silicone in your hair.

what joe and barker said
megret - 6/3/09, 4:45 am
i have curly hair and havent shampooed since 2007!

what i do almost every day:
rinse my hair with warm water to detangle it (finger comb only with a bunch of different types of oil based frizz serum stuff)
use a little bit of gel to slow down the frizz
air dry

washing:
maybe once a week or less, i use conditioner
once every month or so i completely cover my hair and scalp with oil for a couple hours. it takes a day or two of rinsing for it to be all soaked in and the excess to wash away

i have started to really really love my curly hair!

i don't ever ever brush my hair and i wash every other day - my hair used to be straight but since i have basically stopped touching it, it's now curly and wavy and awesome. i don't have to do a damn thing with it and it looks great every day. why did no one tell me this 10 years ago? i could have saved myself a whole lotta frustration.
exxsarahx - 6/3/09, 8:05 am
I wash my hair once a week. i use a shower cap and hair powder during the week
meaghan - 6/9/09, 5:03 am

i wash my hair every day(ish) and brush it with conditioner in the shower.
maybe i should try this not washing thing

if i don't condition and brush it my hair starts dreading in 2 days
meaghan - 7/3/09, 6:17 pm
yeah i've been doing just conditioner everyday. it is soft as fuck, let me tell you...
fre(drgonzo)dy - 7/3/09, 7:36 pm
george, let it dread my friend
i have to wash my hair once
every two weeks
as long as i didnt wear a hat
hats are not good for dirty hair
djd - 7/3/09, 7:52 pm
I asked my hair person about this (she specializes in curly hair) and she's not a fan of the no-shampoo-ever trend. Says she can always tell when people don't use shampoo—hair is heavier, more oily, and (she said) smells. If you're going to skip shampoo, she said you should at least scrunch around with your fingers in the shower as if you're using it. This is all from her, not from me.
George - 7/3/09, 7:55 pm
dreads with bangs would look hilarious and retarded.

i would only dread my hair if i was going to cut it all off. i don't like dreadlocks
ManxomeFoe - 7/3/09, 8:48 pm
I was too lazy to read this thread, but I just rinse every day and condition once a week. i have bangs, everything's fine.
joedinkin - 7/3/09, 8:57 pm
i have little to add to this thread cause my hair is at most wavy, not curly, plus i am balding anyway.

but: manx, i like it when people forgot they posted in a thread several times a month ago. like you. in this thread.
foresme - 7/4/09, 6:06 am
i am trying real real hard to do this no washing thing but my hair feels so oily now :/ will that feeling go away?
melinda - 7/4/09, 6:26 am
the "curly girl system" that was mentioned way at the top of the thread is probably "deva curl" products. they have a book called curly girl, a whole line of products, a diffuser that looks like a hand, a special technique for cutting hair and their own salons, training workshops... it's like a cult!
Aviatrix - 7/4/09, 11:18 am
the leman juice extract is really important
