its an old road hbs campus is so beautiful this time of year lower allston is better on foot i like walking like when people see me walking and walk they bikes with me several spots
RyanMcGinty - 5/19/09, 4:19 am
| there is this one spot heading towards harvard that you can't avoid a solid 4 seconds of trauma
without going into the other lane. most notorious bad road. probably has not been repaved in our lifetimes. |
clara - 5/19/09, 4:21 am
It is fucking horrible. I have to ride on it any time I need to go to harvard sq. fucking sucks unfuck- that is all well and good but sometimes you gotta be somewhere!
ryantheterrible - 5/19/09, 4:23 am
i ride it every day. I've called, i've written at streganona's suggestion, to no avail. Lost cause.
danepants - 5/19/09, 4:32 am
I hear harvard owns that road...go figure...
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 4:42 am
Not fixing roads (several towns do this, I know Belmont does at times (see rte 60)) slows down traffic. People slow down on bumpier roads.
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 4:43 am
danepants - 8:32 am (216.163.216.2) I hear harvard owns that road...go figure... From who?
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 4:46 am
Plus, it was just winter, we're barely into road refinishing season. Not sure if there are city plans for that section this year, but even if there were, they probably wouldn't have started yet.
danepants - 5/19/09, 4:48 am
From a friend who works as an inspector for Boston DPW. I complained to him, and he said "hey hey its not our problem, harvard is responsible for that road".
brandon_c - 5/19/09, 4:50 am
| that stretch of north harvard is not just a "oh they'll fix it in the spring" thing. it's
been bad for years. whether or not harvard "owns" the street, they own land all around it and could almost certainly exert more influence than a few random people calling up the city |
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 4:52 am
Harvard does not "own" North Harvard Street. They may have a maintenance responsibility agreement, but it is not a private road owned by Harvard.
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 4:53 am
brandon_c - 8:50 am (66.31.41.210) that stretch of north harvard is not just a "oh they'll fix it in the spring" thing. it's been bad for years. They powers that be very well may not want it fixed up. There are reasons for not doing so.
danepants - 5/19/09, 4:54 am
ah, ok, thanks for the correction. makes sense. freakin haaaaaavahd.
Brian - 5/19/09, 5:17 am
It is an absolutely horrible road.
metacom - 5/19/09, 5:23 am
it has been fucked since i've lived in this city. so, at least 5 years. its just weird that its one of the worst ever roads in boston since it like, runs through Harvard. i think it reflects poorly on them, whatever the reason.
brandon_c - 5/19/09, 5:29 am
| i have a feeling it's just institutionalized incompetence and/or apathy, not some kind of grand
devious plan. there are ways to slow down traffic (some of which are visible in other parts of the harvard campus) that don't involve making the street unsafe. it definitely reflects poorly on them -- they're trying to win (at least token) community support for a bunch of big initiatives in that exact area, but they can't make a small effort to fix a half-mile stretch of road? |
metacom - 5/19/09, 5:30 am
yeah its such a small road too - seems like it should be easy enough to take care of.
sbethw - 5/19/09, 5:31 am
this is the one spot where it is ok for you to ride on the sidewalk.
metacom - 5/19/09, 5:32 am
it stinks too because its such a convenient way to get to harvard square
sbethw - 5/19/09, 5:33 am
BU had something to do with the reconstruction of Comm ave so i think Harvard definitely has the ability to help out with this much smaller road.
ManxomeFoe - 5/19/09, 5:34 am
| Ahhh, the bi-yearly North Harvard St thread. Been fucked since I moved here 8 years ago. You can
actually cut through the side path of Harvard Stadium for most of the block, providing there is no
game there, and it will improve your happiness by a tiny iota that might be worth it. Anyway, it's definitely not getting fixed because of some kind of city v. harvard thing I'm sure. |
vivaburrito - 5/19/09, 5:40 am
| Someone was telling me recently about a 50-some odd year extension plan by Harvard which the peoples
of Allston are naturally opposed to. I imagine no roads will be fixed till something like that is
settled. And that group of 5-6 really tall cranes across from Harvard stadium creeps me out. |
ManxomeFoe - 5/19/09, 5:41 am
Those cranes look awesome! I noticed them on sat night and wished I had a camera to take a pic. It was all foggy and they were lit up.
metacom - 5/19/09, 5:50 am
no! not the cranes! don't talk about the cranes!
andeet - 5/19/09, 6:52 am
yeah it's shitsystem these days with the construction, i avoid
ManxomeFoe - 5/19/09, 6:54 am
Coming over from Cambridge, you should also consider the western ave bridge and then using cambridge --> brookline st back to cambridge.
omar - 5/19/09, 6:59 am
nothing like arriving in harvard sq. on your bike with soar testicles.
ryantheterrible - 5/19/09, 7:00 am
sbethw - 9:33 am (98.217.184.160) BU had something to do with the reconstruction of Comm ave so i think Harvard definitely has the ability to help out with this much smaller road. In fact BU proposed the idea, a beautification project. I think it's kinda crappy but eh.
Dolores - 5/19/09, 7:00 am
I am just waiting for the day this road is fixed, like i have dreams about I am also waiting for the day I fucking eat shit on this road...sidewalk it is
omar - 5/19/09, 7:04 am
see, it's such a commonly used road though. i think the reason it's gotten to be so bad is that if they close it down, it's going to bring a shit storm to memorial drive visavis central, watertown and allston (traffic and busses that normally go that route).
RIDETHESNAKE - 5/19/09, 7:08 am
| yeah, this is ridiculous. i always assumed they didnt fix it because it's a "throughway"
and because so many people park there overnight. is this in cambridge or allston? if cambridge, we should all call: Pothole Reporting Residents are encouraged to call the DPW pothole information line at (617) 349-4854 to report potholes. It is the responsibility of the Street Maintenance Division to repair the pothole as soon as possible after the pothole report is received. When leaving a pothole repair message please describe the location as detailed as possible and include the date and time of call. The Street Maintenance Division will review and inspect the pothole, usually within 24 hours; in most cases the pothole will be repaired in within 48 hours, weather permitting. |
omar - 5/19/09, 7:09 am
it definitely allston/brighton. on our side of the dirty water.
ryantheterrible - 5/19/09, 7:11 am
Two years ago there was a ton of construction and one side of the street was closed down one week at a time for a month or two and it was to put in brand new sidewalks.
Dolores - 5/19/09, 7:11 am
GONNA TAKE THIS SUCKER ON RIGHT NOW
RIDETHESNAKE - 5/19/09, 7:12 am

much. if this is in ALLSTON/BOSTON heres a link to the online pothole reporting form OR CALL 617.635.4500 |
tinobeat - 5/19/09, 7:31 am
I understand the traffic-calming aspects of bumpier roads, but I've gotten multiple flat tires driving over that stretch of road. If they want calmer traffic, they could put speed bumps on it, and spare my car the damage.
jeffpoot - 5/19/09, 9:33 am

farhad - 5/19/09, 9:51 am
| i'm way stubborn when it comes to north harvard street, but it seems like it's going to be almost
totally unrideable after another winter. they don't even seem to be able to patch anything. timberlinerecs - 8:42 am (128.103.189.82) Not fixing roads (several towns do this, I know Belmont does at times (see rte 60)) slows down traffic. People slow down on bumpier roads. a portion of rt 60 has been repaved recently, i think? most of the stretch from rt 2 to trapelo, anyhow. trapelo and belmont street still stink, though. |
timberlinerecs - 5/19/09, 9:54 am
farhad - 1:51 pm (209.6.158.97) a portion of rt 60 has been repaved recently, i think? most of the stretch from rt 2 to trapelo, anyhow. After the construction at the Waverly Sq end was done, yes. Belmont generally avoids it though, unless there the dual purpose of upgrading the sewer lines, which is a very long term project. I know it slows me down a lot. 25mph isn't very fast, and is very easy to go over when not paying attention.
RIDETHESNAKE - 5/19/09, 9:55 am
the online complaint form is down, but everyone should: OR CALL 617.635.4500 OR CALL 617.635.4500 OR CALL 617.635.4500 and bitch abt this. THE SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE!!!!
farhad - 5/19/09, 9:55 am
yeah they definitely don't seem to have any interest in repaving belmont/trapelo. or indicating how many lanes there are. it is maddening.
RyanMcGinty - 5/19/09, 10:16 am
| whoa. i wish i had known about that notice of claim thing last summer. would have definitely tried
to get the city to pay for my wheel that i legitimately busted up hitting a huge pot hole in boston.
statute of limitations is 30 days though :( will definitely do this next time!! |

Aviatrix - 6/1/09, 10:53 am
so I rode my bike to work (brookline to out by fresh pond) today for the first time. I'm very new at biking in the city and was initially terrified. I got to this part of the ride and was like OH GOD NO WHAT WHY. Geez what a crapped up street.
ManxomeFoe - 6/1/09, 10:55 am
oOf, wait until you're going back into allston. It might actually be worse on that side.
skybondsor - 6/1/09, 11:04 am
sbethw - 05/19/09 - 9:31 am (98.217.184.160) this is the one spot where it is ok for you to ride on the sidewalk. People occasionally yell at me for riding on the sidewalk for this stretch of road. I usually yell back, "The street is effed!" but as a pedestrian it's probably difficult to understand just HOW effed it is.
farhad - 6/1/09, 11:07 am
oh dang i usually find the way out of allston to be worse, but maybe i just haven't memorized my choreography yet.

Yes, yes it is. Really? They just started tearing up sidewalks and such...it is pretty bad. It sounds like they are doing the same thing there that they are here, though. Making the sidewalks bigger, adding a bike lane and losing a car travel lane. |

dink - 7/15/09, 5:01 am
i am also excited. biking over that is the absolute worst! finally something good to say regarding the roads in the city.
RyanMcGinty - 7/15/09, 5:16 am

ryantheterrible - 7/29/09, 12:56 pm
So it's all paved, lanes are painted on and it's a smooth ride BUT it isn't wide enough. there is only a bike lane going from allston to cambridge but not the other way the cars are much wider than the area they are designated to park in. other than that it's a dream to bike on finally.

dynne - 7/29/09, 1:46 pm

ffej - 7/29/09, 2:03 pm
they raised the level of the road recently, so fewer things are sticking up... also, since it has rained some, it no longer sticks tons of little rocks to by tires (right after they paved it the first time i still rode on the sidewalk because i would ride it and at the end my tires would have about 100 pebbles glued to it from the tar).
Aviatrix - 7/29/09, 2:06 pm
This is so much nicer. The bike lane that is covered by parked cars is comical.
ffej - 7/29/09, 2:13 pm
Aviatrix - 2:06 pm (128.33.75.249) This is so much nicer. The bike lane that is covered by parked cars is comical. yeah, saw that today. what's the story with that? are cars allowed to park on that side, or were some messages crossed? |
mykecameron - 7/29/09, 2:15 pm
it would be sort of hilarious if they made that stretch of N Harvard no parking
Aviatrix - 7/29/09, 2:15 pm
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is. I mean, cars have always parked over there so if something changed maybe they just weren't aware. It did make me imagine that I had the ability to suddenly become extremely tiny so I could fit under cars and then rebiggulate when I had enough space again, so I'll stop talking now.
dink - 7/29/09, 2:23 pm
Aviatrix - 2:15 pm (128.33.75.249) rebiggulate awesome.
adamh - 7/29/09, 2:27 pm
| i rode down there last night and it was a biker's paradise. they still had the road closed off to
motor vehicle traffic. they will probably tear it up again next week for some foolish electrical business or something. i suggest riding it now. |
dink - 7/29/09, 2:29 pm
I'm going to ride it later tonight. This is exciting.
RyanMcGinty - 7/29/09, 2:49 pm
dink - 2:29 pm (204.90.13.205) I'm going to ride it later tonight. This is exciting. me too! also someone take a picture of the failed bike line and write fail on it and send it to the city they might repaint the lanes in like 15 years or something probably?
ffej - 7/29/09, 2:54 pm
| that "bike lane" is so confusing. it starts halfway down the road (why not earlier?) out
in a more proper place, and then ends up looking like something that is just a side marker of a
road, and it only runs for about a quarter mile or so. the road is still a work in progress, so maybe they don't want people to park there eventually. |
ryantheterrible - 7/29/09, 2:55 pm
I dunno why people park there anyway, it isn't really near anything
Aviatrix - 7/29/09, 2:56 pm

timberlinerecs - 7/29/09, 3:01 pm
ryantheterrible - 2:55 pm (128.197.226.42) I dunno why people park there anyway, it isn't really near anything Other than apartments, dorms, classes, and work that is.
ffej - 7/29/09, 3:02 pm
ryantheterrible - 2:55 pm (128.197.226.42) I dunno why people park there anyway, it isn't really near anything it's reasonably close to harvard square... cambridge is a pain for parking with resident parking all over the place? |
weth - 7/29/09, 3:09 pm
| It seems like they're still repainting the road (not done closer to Western) and probably will
change parking signage. It's nice to have a smooth road, but opening paths on both side like that is likely taking away a ton of parking which would be annoying. |

RIDETHESNAKE - 7/30/09, 12:32 pm
| i think bike lanes do more harm than good on streets where they overlap with parked cars...or turn
lanes but im glad the city is at least making an effort to provide better infrastructure for cyclists. baby steps |
tim - 7/30/09, 12:39 pm
yeah, its like, how about we get some cycling related stuff out there first, ok.. then maybe we can get nitpicky about improving it/making it more effective.

City of Boston passes bike lane ordinance; prohibits parking in a bike lane or marked shared lane.
tommyvon - 8/4/09, 12:58 pm
its nice its paved but did they just remove like 60 parking spots?
djd - 8/4/09, 1:03 pm
Halfway down last night cars were parked all along the right side, which maybe? was a bike lane. The middle of the road had a full lane's width painted off in yellow for NO visible reason. Could easily have fit parking + bike lane + two car lanes without that. Really fucking stupid.
dynne - 8/4/09, 1:03 pm
| Exceptions. Nothing in these sections shall prevent standing or parking a motor vehicle in a
marked bike lane or shared bike lane: (i) when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or
pedestrians; (ii) in compliance with the lawful direction of a police officer or official traffic
sign; or (iii) unless authorized to do so under existing regulations (including but not limited to
designated residential parking lanes or parking meters). will the last clause in the exception effect no harvard st? I can't remember if there were meters or not. I just want to know if I can still lol at the parked over bike lane when I get back in a few weeks. |
PB - 8/4/09, 1:03 pm
yeah. so cars and cyclists can live together in harmony on n. harvard.
RyanMcGinty - 8/4/09, 1:04 pm
there are still cars parked there all the time so far they do need to make some no parking signs if they want that to be a real bike lane though
moxie - 8/4/09, 1:08 pm
Not as many parking spots as they took away on Western Ave between Soldiers Field Road and North Harvard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there is a bike lane on Western Ave? It's just an oddly wide street with no markings accept at the light. I feel like Elaine on Seinfeld when she is cruising down the double-wide lane on the highway.
moxie - 8/4/09, 1:09 pm
RyanMcGinty - 1:04 pm (69.173.102.45) there are still cars parked there all the time so far they do need to make some no parking signs if they want that to be a real bike lane though There are signs! They are just completely ignored. What the city needs to do is actually enforce. I am surprised there are no tickets on those cars.
RIDETHESNAKE - 8/4/09, 1:12 pm
| they had temporary no parking signs up on n harvard the other day, but the bike lane into cambridge
is kind of counterintuitive. it starts and stops according to those side streets that arent even
streets and there are now even more jerks doing three point turns to find a spot on that stretch of
rd. the non standing thing is good, but the real danger with bike lanes and parking is getting doored . until they put up signs everywhere reminding drivers to look before they open their car doors, i dont know if these bikes lanes will provide any added safety bonus. it's a good start, though and cool that the ordinance passed |
RyanMcGinty - 8/4/09, 4:56 pm
i suspect that the bike lane going to cambridge is meant to replace the parking. that's what it really looks like, otherwise they designed a bike lane that seamlessly transitions into a really narrow car parking guideline, and that would just be crazy. there are temporary no parking signs that are being ignored because they look like they are left over from the construction. meanwhile the permanent signs that are there are the no parking during snow emergency signs, which imply that you can park there whenever there isn't snow. i'm guessing those will all be taken down soon and replaced with serious no parking signs. once that happens, you really have the ideal bike lane, with no dooring potential at all.
tommyvon - 8/24/09, 8:00 am
| yea they literally cleared that street of all parking minus like 20 spaces. I know from the winter,
people left their cars there untouched for months. Its cool theres bike lanes, but why eliminate all the parking? i dont park there but it seems silly. Also, prior to paving being done the road was a log jam of traffic.. now you're hard pressed to find any. weird. |
RyanMcGinty - 8/24/09, 9:08 am
it's a major passage over the charles and it's pretty narrow when there are cars parked. the shittiness of the road definitely caused people to go really slow and with less people parallel parking and getting stuck behind bikes it should definitely ease up the traffic quite a bit.
adamh - 8/24/09, 9:14 am
also, harvard is moving the charlesview apartments so perhaps they figured it wasn't as necessary to have all the parking along that street.
tommyvon - 8/24/09, 10:00 am
true, but with harvards current economic mess that could happen in like 50 years
ryantheterrible - 8/24/09, 10:05 am
those leftover winter cars that were there for months had a buttload of tickets, and boots, or got towed after like a week.

RIDETHESNAKE - 8/26/09, 3:00 pm this stretch is now the highlight of what is generally a less than pleasant ride through harvard into allston. Since I veer off of N Harvard and take Everett over the highway into Allston now, this ride is almost 100% pleasant for me. What used to be one of the worst stretches of road in town is now damn near the best! Especially now that they're ticketing.
farhad - 8/26/09, 3:47 pm
it's even better in a car. the only losers are the people who parked in that area, and it seems like most of them were using it for long term storage so i'm not exactly shedding any tears.
farhad - 8/26/09, 3:49 pm
