I send it: funeral doom

Morgan - 4/24/09, 9:50 am
I just sent this to a friend in exchange for some Indian classical/slide guitar records and though some of you all might dig some of it. This was the second round; I sent him some more obvious sludge/doom stuff and he mentioned that Corrupted seemed kind of slick and pretty so I thought I'd up the ante. These are some really gnarly records (aside from Aes, which is totally awesome but more heavy/clean), and I can't emphasize enough how creepy the samples in "Give Them Pain" (Stabat Mater) are making me feel at work right now. I'm guessing maybe a few board folks might get a kick out of these, so here you go:

--
Wait, here's a perfect circle of split records - all super-grimy
funeral doom. Definitely less pretty and more fucked-up than Corrupted
although not as long either (most songs fall around the 10 minute
mark).

Stabat Mater / Mournful Congregation

Mournful Congregation / Worship

Stabat Mater / Worship
http://rapidshare.com/files/146654576/Stabat_Mater_2002_Split_by_Thou_Art_Schwarz.rar
Stabat Mater's side deserves special mention for its ultra-creepy
flogging samples.

Also,

Skepticism - Aes (1999)
http://rapidshare.com/files/154695113/S-Aes_by_Rest.rar
One big song, really heavy and stripped down to the point where it
almost doesn't sound like the drummer's playing a "real" kit - I've
seen live pictures and he seems to have a second bass drum mounted
where the rack toms would be? Anyhow, I've been enjoying this record
lately, but if you like Skepticism all their records are good.

Do it!

For the record, I think the Stabat Mater song on their split with Deathspell Omega (who he eventually ended up singing for) is better/heavier than these, but I liked the symmetry of the three I posted.

If you like Neurosis, Wildildlife, Virus and newer Ulver are some current favorites of mine.

This stuff is really melodic, in a good way.

Mornful congregation can write a hook!

Shit, sorry - I remember thinking I needed to remember to copy the password, but my memory is like swiss cheese. Try this one:

I totally agree about the hooks and melody thing by the way.
Morgan - 4/29/09, 6:16 pm
All right, this is an old-time funeral doom classic - not nearly as gnarly and kvlt as most of this stuff but still totally awesome and unique and crucial and all that:

thanks for linking to all this stuff, morgan!

There are way too many good metal threads to try and keep up with.

this thread deserves some thergothon!

Funeral - From These Wounds is a ridiculously good record with amazing vox. Dont have the files readily available but here is the myspace:

Yes. A German funeral doom record based on "Moby Dick". This kicks Mastodon's ass so hard, you have no idea. Yes.

Thergothon- Stream from the Heavens
funeral doom classic.

also in my YSI thread I posted Winter's Into Darkness/Eternal Frost
Morgan - 4/30/09, 5:29 am
Thergothon rules. We need Morgion too!
wwd - 4/30/09, 5:59 am
I love the call of the wretched sea
wwd - 4/30/09, 6:09 am
also see ahab - the oath
Morgan - 4/30/09, 6:39 am
Have you heard their other stuff, Mark? I need to check out the new record.
POB - 4/30/09, 6:49 am
I'll definitely check these out at home. I'm way into Corrupted.
wwd - 4/30/09, 6:51 am
I've only heard wretched sea, and "the oath" which I could up if anyone wants
andeet - 4/30/09, 6:52 am
ah thanks for Thergothon. I missed the reissue of their stuff from a few years back, i think it disappeared in a flash
will - 4/30/09, 7:08 am
i'm gonna download some of this stuff

but if your friend thought corrupted was too "slick" then why not send him some older corrupted stuff?
Morgan - 4/30/09, 8:26 am
I'm not really a fan of the older Corrupted I've heard (which was like, a record or two, maybe the Noothgrush split?) so I figured I'd stick with what I know.

Wormphlegm "Tomb Of The Ancient King"
http://rapidshare.com/files/209936583/Tomb_of_the_Ancient_King__2006_.zip

Fucking heavy as hell, this basically sounds like if a pack of easily frightened children wandered into a dark echoey cave only to run into a grizzly bear on the wrong end of a serious cough syrup bender.
Morgan - 5/27/09, 1:59 pm
Shuffling these electrons for you people is thankless work.
wwd - 5/27/09, 4:31 pm
YO i've been rocking stormcrowfleet which i could swear was from this thread??????@!?
eitherway its really great. i'm bout to cop that wormphlegm too!
really one of the best threads right here.
wwd - 5/27/09, 4:33 pm
also that newer album ALLOY which i think usent, rips!
wwd - 5/27/09, 5:05 pm
oh man this wormpleghm is no joke!
bio_rad - 5/27/09, 5:06 pm
how did i not download Ahab before? i'm remedying this right now.
Morgan - 5/27/09, 5:33 pm
Alloy is pretty sweet. I put on Stormcrowfleet the other night and it totally killed the party except for Aaron "the D" who loved it. I need to figure out why my ipod won't play all those Stabat Mater tracks back to back.
Morgan - 6/10/09, 11:37 am
Okay, here's another awesome early funeral doom record. Probably the weirdest one I've uploaded yet? Super heavy, slow, long songs, etc. but with a harsh psychedelic edge throughout - tons of vocal effects, weird echo and reverb, fuzz all over, fucked-up sounding guitars, basically a total bad trip record (which is apparently the intention behind the band, go figure). Esoteric are from the UK which is weird because the UK was all about gothic doom/death like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema and not fucked up shit like this. Anyhow, this record rules. Like all but a couple of their albums, it's a double CD even though it only has a handful of songs.

Yes, this is the cover:

Yeah Moss. Good stuff.
Quinn/Fatalist - 6/10/09, 11:45 am
Disembowelment is the worst. Gayest doom band ever.
Morgan - 6/10/09, 11:47 am
Yes, George! Just when you're spacing out some kind of horrible noise comes blasting out of one headphone.
George - 6/10/09, 12:00 pm
yeah man, i have all of esoteric's stuff except for the one that came out last year, so let me know if you want me to upload any of those.

nortt is some great blackened funeral doom though.

Loss - Life without hope...death without reason
George - 6/10/09, 2:10 pm
that ahab album RULES
Morgan - 6/10/09, 2:56 pm
Yeah. I'm also pretty sure My Dying Bride is the gayest doom metal band ever. Disembowelment were like weird musical anthropology hippies or something.
George - 6/10/09, 2:59 pm
i always just assumed that my dying bride was a goth band. but i havn't heard them since high school
Morgan - 6/10/09, 5:26 pm
They're not not a goth band, but they also made some good doom records. I've been listening to "The Light At The End Of The World" a bunch lately. But yeah, it's "doom" with some clean vocals and lots of keyboards (and sometimes violin) between the heavy parts, and wicked melodramatic lyrics - I've seen them referred to as "doom/death" because they had harsher vocals than bands like Candlemass, Pentagram, etc. I really like them.

This is a song off "Turn Loose The Swans," one of their earlier records.
Morgan - 6/10/09, 5:28 pm
Yeah just to clarify, I meant they were "gay" in the "not afraid to show their sensitive side" sense. Great band, basically got me into doom.
wh - 6/10/09, 5:32 pm
oh hi

downloadin when i get home
Morgan - 6/22/09, 12:27 pm
Finally got around to listening to Loss and Moss.

Loss - really good, but a lot more melodic and song-y than I was expecting. Definitely some vaguely jazzy chord changes, which are pretty cool sounding but also not incredibly heavy. The music definitely reminds me of earlier, more goth doom.

Moss - dude this fucking rules. So fucking nasty and primitive.

In conclusion, GEORGE #1.
Morgan - 6/23/09, 12:18 pm
Haha, Loss is growing on me BUT the dude's intro to the live Katatonia cover is a perfect illustration of why bands like this should never, ever talk onstage at all.
TheLustyGhost - 6/23/09, 12:20 pm
Disembowelment were like weird musical anthropology hippies or something.

That could be really terrible or really good, depending on how you mean "hipppies" and how you mean "anthropology"
Morgan - 6/23/09, 12:21 pm
It's less weird than it sounds, unless you also listen to the "ethno-ambient" band they turned into.
bsullivan - 6/23/09, 12:25 pm
sorry i missed this until now, dammit.
George - 6/23/09, 12:26 pm
yeah moss is insane. i'll upload the new album sometime tomorrow
TheLustyGhost - 6/23/09, 12:26 pm
"ethno-ambient" sounds terrible.

"weird musical anthropology hippies" doing doom doesn't actually sound that weird to me but I bet it is bad.

Unless it means some kind of rural commune who eat mushrooms and liten to old field recordings all.
Morgan - 6/23/09, 12:28 pm
Sully: quite a few of these links are to files that inexplicably don't expire the way normal YSI ones do. Give them a shot!

OM: I actually like Disembowelment, although they aren't my favorite or anything.
TheLustyGhost - 6/23/09, 12:30 pm
I'll check them out.
Drana - 6/24/09, 12:07 pm

I don't know how I sit with the dialogue/spoken-word thing going on.
Morgan - 11/14/09, 12:00 pm
I was fussing with my CDs and turned up an old copy of this band's first EP (limited run of 100 CDRs, vlv oop etc. big spenders pm me asap). It's pretty fucking good, classic funeral doom with echoey melody guitars, creepy clean parts, deep vocals, and so on. They're American and just one dude, and have a newer album I haven't heard. Get scurred.

Dude, I have three 10+ page papers due by December and I'm spending Saturday morning thinking about a one-man band that recorded an entire record about imaginary monsters that a crazy person wrote about 80 years ago. THINK ABOUT THAT.
