VIEW JACK NICHOLSON Why he might be the best Joker: - had an excellent natural Joker smile, didn't take much makeup (though the makeup was excellent) - Portrayed the murderous rogue who takes nothing seriously to a T, played it to the hilt. Made Michael Keaton look like a square. - Has a back-story and already a well-established criminal (Jack Napier) before his accident - has cool catch-phrases - likes Prince - boardcrush: Kim Basinger Why not: - way old, zero fighting skills - "Big time" gangster doesn't totally strike fear into the hearts of the common man, whereas you might think "Nah, this Joker's too big to concern himself with me." - Has substandard henchmen who can't fly a helicopter or hurry anything up |

| IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW HEATH LEDGER: Why he might be the best Joker: - youngest (read: not middle-aged) Joker - superior fighting skills - seems truly deranged and dangerous to anyone around, big or small, whoever - is honest about a distinct lack of motivation for anything other than havoc - always kills his substandard henchmen - fears nothing, doesn't even flinch during fights - makes his own clothes (DIY crime ethic) - self-made man - has cool Tina-Fey esque scars, although slightly more macabre Why not: - can't even remember why he has scars - Face isn't really white - "Absolute character" or "totally undeveloped character?" you be the judge - Doesn't seem to be able to make junk or even hire people who can - seems crazy and cunning, but maybe not too intelligent |

| metacom: I prefer discourse on your feelings. We can't really "elect" an ultimate Joker, and two of these dudes are dead. Which maybe gives a few points to Jack, who managed to do the role without dying. |

| I will have to unequivocally go with Heath Ledger. I realize that this is a really popular pick
right now, what with Dark Knight being out and everyone talking it up big, but I believe he is the
right choice for best joker. Mostly, I feel this way because of his character's philosophy on crime and violence, and the skill with which Heath Ledger was able to deliver that philosophy. Heath Ledger's joker comes off as a force of nature, a wholly unpredictable and unreasonable criminal. He is immune to all of the standard bribes and lures. He doesn't want money. He doesn't want power. He doesn't want to be worshipped or "run" the city. He wants chaos. It's truly the only thing he cares for. This makes him at once more scary and dangerous than any other joker. This philosophy, as I call it, stays with you long after the movie is over with all its explosions and car chases. Basically, he's the most punk joker. |

| one good thing about Heath Ledger's Joker is that you can barely tell it's Heath Ledger under there. |
| digger - 07/25/08 - 8:33 am (18.38.2.103) |
| Heath Ledger's Joker is certainly the Obama of this race, and I agree with your arguments, but what
about Jack Nicholson's Joker do you think were the "negatives?" And also, for any future respondents, let's not get all misty-eyed and worshippy over Heath; don't forget the movie was not written, produced, directed, edited, scored, shot/etc. by Heath Ledger, and while he portrayed the Joker character to the hilt, he didn't write the bloody book on him! ALSO negative for Heath's Joker: - boardcrush: Maggie Gyllenhaal. Maggie Gyllenhaal? Really? |
| metacom - 07/25/08 - 8:39 am (68.236.90.186) |
| The only negatives I can see with Heath Ledger's joker are that he's kind of hot/a babe. Which might
actually be a plus, depending on what you expect/want in the joker as a character. I guess to me,
I've never thought of the joker as young and good-looking. It works, but I could see it being a
negative. Conversely, Jack Nicholson's joker is too old. He can't fight. He can't exude the insane physical body language I want in a joker. He's also a bit too Mafia Boss/Sophisticated criminal for me. |
| digger - 07/25/08 - 8:43 am (18.38.2.103) |
| I do like that Heath's Joker articulated what it was I loved about the character but could never put my finger upon. But then again, do I thank Heath? Do I thank Christopher and Jonathan Nolan (screen play writers)? Or just Christopher the director? |
| Mxyzptlk - 07/25/08 - 8:45 am (72.15.195.84) |
| ok. while submit, heath ledger is indeed a hottie, i don't think his joker was very hot at all. part
of his joker's charm was the physical transformation. that being said. i'm going with cesar romero. |
| metacom - 07/25/08 - 8:50 am (68.236.90.186) |
| My gratitude is split like this: 60% Heath, 30% Screenplay Writers, 10% Director. The reason is -- yes, the screenplay writers are responsible for the vision. They no doubt created the idea that this joker was going to be fucking nuts. Awesome idea. But, awesome as that is, imagine if some goofy asshole played the joker. This idea could have been turned to shit in the wrong hands. Heath Ledger gave this role his all and delivered the message better than I could have hoped. The director gets props for letting this ride, approving the direction and final product. All this said, I of course don't know what the screenplay is like or how much people did behind the scenes. |

| neogonzo - 07/25/08 - 9:40 am (66.92.89.126) |
| i'll post as soon as i see this movie, but to be fair i never watched any episodes with the joker in the original tv show |

| God I hate to say it because I LOVE Jack Nicholson, but I do think Heath may have been better.. but I also do think this has to do with the screenwriters & such |

| heath brought a crazy depth and ridiculousness to the joker. he is the slayer's reign in blood of that character, untouchable in performance. i like jack nicholson's joker a lot, and cesar romero is classic in the role. but heath nailed the frank miller type vision of it, which i personally prefer. |
