post pictures of unconventional, but not hideous, wedding stuff. dresses, ceremonies, cakes, whatever. not stupid stuff. anything that still looks beautiful without having any taffeta, tulle, glitter, etc. i am not princess barbie.

no reason.

Red envelopes are traditionally given by chinese people on days of celebration filled with money. instead, we asked that all guests at our wedding participate in our ceremony by writing their wishes for our marriage on a card and placing it in the red envelope. the bridespeople and groomspeople walked down the aisle with baskets and collected all the wishes from the guests, then placed it at the altar. we were then married surrounded by everyone’s good wishes for our marriage. each envelope had a number written on it, from 1 to 60. We will open all envelopes labeled “1″ on our first wedding anniversary, all envelopes labeled “50″ on our 50th wedding anniversary, etc

unconventional weddings don't count, y'know...
monacomachine - 07/23/08 - 9:16 am (134.174.151.132)
We rented a summer camp.

I highly recommend it-- it was inexpensive, totally low-key, and fun for everyone, from kids to old people. It was a whole weekend, people stayed in the camp cabins, we had a semi-potluck main dinner, kegs and an all night dance party, a pancake breakfast, my dad married us, there was kickball and canoe races.

Good luck and congrats!

eatingout - 07/26/08 - 7:33 pm (66.31.45.77)
If you are serious, call some places up. It was cheaper to reserve space at the bbq place than any hall/vfw/elks club/etc.

Its also way cheaper than a caterer, in many instances.

(ps - make the guests fill up on seaweed salad or something)
bio_rad - 07/26/08 - 7:37 pm (71.219.34.195)
i think if i ever get married, it will have to be at one of those private room karaoke places, and there will be sushi all over the place, and an open bar that only serves mai tais and scorpion bowls.

.. that's a big if, though.

My parents had an awesome quasi-elopement. They knew they were gonna get married, their families knew they were gonna get married, but there was no date set. Then one day they were in a coastal Croatian town with my pop's family and they said they were gonna go into town to run some errands. They went to a justice of the peace or whatever Croatian equivalent there is, and got married. They met my dad's family in town later and told them they'd just gotten married. Just then an annual town celebration/festival was starting, and rumor went around that some couple had gotten married, and so thousands of people toasted and partied with my folks. My mom wore a bright red dress and my dad wore black pants, a black shirt, and some sunglasses. The pictures look badass.

My wife and I had a more traditional church wedding, with the reception at the Fogg Museum. I think the unconventional stuff was in the details, not necessarily the whole picture. We had a Hungarian vocal group sing as guests came, we had Eli Reed & The True Loves play a burnin' dance party, and there were lots of little bits of Croatian, Hungarian, and Southern tradition strewn around. It wasn't some wild reinvention, but it really was the most wonderful party. Kalyn wore an incredible dress, the bridesmaids wore black, looked awesome, and I had my guys wear black suits. I didn't want a tuxedo anywhere near the proceedings...

I wish I had some pictures
tinobeat - 07/27/08 - 12:49 am (98.216.110.248)
hit "make it so" too soon!

I wish I had some pictures online, we've been exceedingly slow on getting the photo album done, its been over two years now.

Morgan - I was looking at pictures of your guys wedding online. You both look amazing!!!
torpaul - 07/27/08 - 10:16 am (68.14.87.52)
man, a sushi bar would be ridiculous. we had a fairly straight forward ceremony in the morning. really quick though. like 15min. then we had a lunch buffet at a local italian restaurant. no dancing or nothing, but we made a playlist and that going in the background. just an informal thing with lots of eating. and then that night we had a party in providence with a dj and bbq-ing. it was a really good day. we went home in between. opened cards. it was nice.

Thanks, guys! Getting that suit together was a labor of love; I think it might've taken me longer than it took Rosie to find her dress. At one point I caught myself seriously thinking "sock garters! How did I forget sock garters?!" and had to take a big mental step back.

all of these weddings look awesome. i looked at both the fogg art museum (couldn't hold all of our guests) and the boston public library for our wedding. bpl was soooooo expensive and only does a few weddings/ year (they have a big waiting list).

I finally uploaded a few pictures of my summer camp wedding as a little propaganda tour, because weddings at camps are pretty flexible and fun.

For example, we had:

Canoe races (unfuckwithable and zekar's niece is in this picture-- cutie pie!!!)

Room enough to accommodate your enormous family

(this is my mom's family-- my dad's family's bigger)

We also had:
1. Kickball
2. A Climbing wall
3. People stayed over in cabins
4. A pancake breakfast
5. Oh, and a wedding ceremony

My favorite part of all was that the camp we got married at serves low-income and homeless kids from Boston (I worked there one summer). Renting the camp also supports their kid programs.

I've had that photo of the red dress saved forever as my potential dress but my hair is gonna be red for the rest of my life and I promised my step-mom I would wear her dress. I wish I had a pic of it. It's soooooo eighties with the biggest, puffy sleeves you'll ever see, but she said I can take 'em off. lol

Hope you find something perfect! When is the big day??

i married these two to each other in the wood with their kids. one kid held the flowers, the other kid threw bottle caps to line the path, and the other one did something else i can't remember. they ran down the path to me and i was directed to say something like, "finally! you're here!" even though we'd all arrived at the same time.

their public wedding involved a ride on a tandem bike. i'll have to find photos of that.

my brother and his wife got married at the top of a hill in Yosemite. It was the most fun wedding ever, and they barely spent any money at all. The "rehearsal dinner" was a costume party and square dance - with a caller and everything. Then the wedding was outside, and afterwards my brother made us all do the Thriller dance - no joke, we had practices and everything. And everyone had a "job", sort of - one person did the flowers, one person made a cake that looked like a mountain (they're both rock climbers), and it was made of brownies and we all had brownie sundaes!

the last wedding i went to, with my co-worker's daughter and bill's co-worker, was SUPER traditional except for one very funny, very maine thing: the rings were carried down the aisle on deer antlers. it got a HUGE laugh, which was awesome because the mother of the bride had been SO INTENSE the whole year they were planning the wedding and it was a relief that it could still be a fun event.

i had a super cheap wedding! it was really fun and full of family, at a hall on the beach in quincy. we ordered pizza and listened to a really long mix of songs that edward made on his computer lined out through a friend's PA. friends and family took pictures, and we did pot luck desserts. so all the pictures are hilarious and goofy and not staged, and all the food was amazingly awesome.

QUESTION!!
so, we don't want to have a giant wedding anyway... so we probably won't have a really big wedding party... but i don't know if i'm close enough with any women to ask them to be in it, anyway. this is sort of a bummer, but whatever. is it weird that i want my mom to be my maid of honor?

:(
BarXtheRockinM - 11/07/08 - 9:49 am (148.183.241.21)
I don't think it's weird at all. And who cares if it is? If your mom is your favorite lady, then why not ask her to be your maid of honor?
argo - 11/07/08 - 9:52 am (65.78.25.94)
Maid or Matron of Honor?

I wouldn't think it's weird, but then I think it's awesome whenever weddings are a bit different. I've shot weddings where the mom was the matron of honor, or the dad was the best man.

Something I like to tell my bridal couples: it's your wedding. Forget about what weddings are "supposed" to be like, or what they "traditionally" entail. What do YOU want? Go with that.

it seems to me like most of these dresses/ weddings are pretty conventional. i think the "uncoventional" thing about them is that all of the girls wearing the dresses have lots of tattoos, or there might be an element of black in the dress. I mean some of the weddings have a quirky cake or whatever but the only truely uncoventional ones posted are appletree's, megrets, the star wars one, and maybe the camp one. Those are the ones I like the best. I know I sound all negative, but I'm looking through this thead waiting to see awesome unconventional stuff and it just looks like the same old boring wedding but with tattoos.
lil_red - 11/30/08 - 11:36 am (71.232.27.90)
our best idea so far is having everyone eat chocolate as part of the ceremony
katiekay - 11/30/08 - 11:41 am (192.138.178.104)
none of these brides look like princess barbie. that's all i had asked for, originally.

i don't care about anyone's tattoos. i think that having guitar hero, photobooths, board game centerpieces, handfasting, swords, bikes, libraries, polkadots, felt flowers, wish trees, etc are all a little bit outside the conventional white-poofy dress, boring organist, church wedding box.

but thanks for contributing!

i generally agree with that sentiment. and while it is not true for every couple that gets married, it can also be worthwhile and incredibly important for a myriad of reasons.

i did not ask for unconventional life decisions. i asked for ways to make a typical, maybe even expected, life decision unique.

i don't know, to each his own. all i know is, we're six months into our engagement and still have LOTS to figure out.

the whole thing is as involved or not as you want it to be.

I don't understand the long engagement thing. Aren't you sort of just dating then?

no, you are engaged to be married. when you are dating you don't know that you are getting married. when you get engaged you decide to get married. sometimes you have the ability to get married the next day, sometimes you need to wait a year or more.
megret - 12/01/08 - 9:34 am (155.52.4.132)
i asked edward to marry me in january, and we got married in june. it was just like planning a big fun party.

the best and funniest parts of our wedding were:
1: when edward and i were looking at each other, holding hands and all that, we realized we left the rings in his backpack, which was behind us. so we had to interrupt the ceremony to fish them out. lots of laughing.
2: when we were saying the vows part, all serious and sweet, the pizza delivery guys came, and the whole room started smelling like delicious pizza, and we all started laughing again.

it ruled. yay weddings. do what you want. be stubborn.
katiekay - 12/01/08 - 9:47 am (98.217.139.165)
i had always said that i wasn't going to get married.. and then i said that if i did i would have a 3-5 year engagement. there are a few things going on in our lives that, in my opinion, just makes it make sense to have at least a year engagement... and really, maybe even longer. but also, we both really want there to be sweet leaves as the backdrop. haha.
ParodyLover - 12/01/08 - 9:50 am (75.69.229.10)
This thread does much to highlight the horrible aesthetic of a shitload of shitty tattoos drawn on one's body to draw attention to one's self/make one into a bigger parody of themselves than they already are.
lil_red - 12/01/08 - 9:50 am (71.232.27.90)
katie that is the same with us. We got engaged in january- knew we wanted to get married in october, and had to choose between either rushing around for 10 months getting shit together, while I was still a full time student working on my thesis, or taking our time and getting married after I graduate. We chose the latter.
linds - 12/01/08 - 10:23 am (75.101.10.76)
We're having a long engagement too - got engaged last Thanksgiving and the date is set for 9/12/09. We knew that this year we'd both be finishing grad school, searching for jobs, and moving, and decided next year would be better.

Thank god we have the amount of time that we do, because we only have the patience for so much wedding-planning stuff at a time, and it's coming along slowly.
Dirigo - 12/01/08 - 10:40 am (74.75.7.251)
hey katiekay is getting married?? congrats! i had no idea.
lil_red - 12/01/08 - 11:12 am (76.19.197.205)
linds- I hear that.
I was pushing for october 2008 at first and now I am so incredibly glad we are waiting till 2009
eepee - 12/01/08 - 4:49 pm (71.174.182.176)
i have friends who got married six months after they got engaged. how they managed to throw all that shit together that quickly is beyond me.
streganona - 12/03/08 - 12:47 pm (64.214.98.3)
i have come to the conclusion that i am obligated in every way to do super low key pizza wedding when that time comes, because anything that takes a significant bite out of our ability to buy our home would be wasteful and irresponsible, and unless we suddenly get rich, it is pretty much one big expenditure or the other, but not both.
boptheduck - 12/03/08 - 12:59 pm (70.102.205.154)
I just ordered my engagement ring. I know it's pretty typical, not at all unusual or unconventional to have an engagement ring, but I don't care. I want one nice sparkly, shiny thing in my otherwise modest, budget-oriented life.

yeah bop, post a pic! i also love sparkly things!

pot-lucks seem like the greatest idea. if we had a smaller wedding, i was going to make loads of meatballs and get all my friends to bring over their crockpots. that with 10 gallons of sauce, a couple hundred loaves of fresh baked bread, and some salad and BAM delicious inexpensive meal.

but in the end, meatballs for 100+ people was a little too ambitious for me.
eepee - 12/03/08 - 1:57 pm (96.233.17.132)
yay sparkly things! just wait until you're wearing it in direct sunlight and it shoots little sparks all over the place. hours of entertainment.
boptheduck - 12/03/08 - 2:26 pm (70.102.205.154)
I will post pics when I have it! It needs to be set and all that good stuff first, and then sent to me. I'll probably have it end of next week.

Or you could all just see it in person when I am in Boston/Western MA/CT Dec. 23-28 :)
eepee - 12/03/08 - 2:28 pm (96.233.17.132)
the nice thing about what you're doing is you'll know it'll fit you so you won't end up having to get it cut off at the fire station.

(cough)
Sparky - 12/03/08 - 2:32 pm (72.46.161.74)
the nice thing about not asking your fiance-to-be is her ring size and then have to try to cram on the wrong size ring and end up having to get it cut off at the fire station.

(you should get that cough looked at)

not, uh, that this is a topic of discussion.
sean - 12/03/08 - 7:00 pm (68.160.48.3)
It would be unconventional to not use stupid jewelry or at least to choose jewelry that isn't dragged out of the ground by slave labor.
boptheduck - 12/03/08 - 8:15 pm (70.102.205.154)
hence the part where I wrote: "I know it's pretty typical, not at all unusual or unconventional to have an engagement ring, but I don't care."

also, my diamond is certified conflict-free, FYI. I'm not a total asshole.
sean - 12/03/08 - 8:19 pm (68.160.48.3)
All diamonds are blood diamonds.

That is awesome. Lab-created stones = pretty awesome science/engineering!
sean - 12/03/08 - 9:53 pm (68.160.48.3)
I was joking.
Artificial diamonds and stones in general are cool.
My only objection is that no one knows it's fake and people think you're wearing a real diamond and thus are an asshole.

eepee - 12/03/08 - 10:01 pm (96.237.81.26)
my diamond is canadian. no conflict, just polar bears. and, according to the certificate, there's a microscopic maple leaf laser-etched in it somewhere. the canadian government is tracking me.
sean - 12/03/08 - 10:03 pm (68.160.48.3)
I don't get it.
It's like a fake mink coat.
People who know what's up still think you're an asshole.
eepee - 12/03/08 - 10:05 pm (96.237.81.26)
it's okay, i think they're assholes too.
sean - 12/03/08 - 10:06 pm (68.160.48.3)

katiekay - 12/04/08 - 9:38 am (98.217.139.165)
i have no ring. he asked if i wanted one and i said no. i am not a jewelry type person, although i do like the symbolism. we'll just have to risk the jinx and get tattoos or something.

thanks, guys!
megret - 12/04/08 - 9:53 am (155.52.4.132)
i didnt go for an engagement ring either! i gave him an antique pocket watch when i asked him. he got rather large portraits of my cats tattooed on his arm several years ago, which means way more to me than jewelry!
djd - 12/04/08 - 10:32 am (24.63.201.100)
All engaged people should wear rings so you can tell at a glance that they are off the market.
streganona - 12/04/08 - 10:33 am (64.214.98.3)
it should take more than the ring to tell you that.
djd - 12/04/08 - 10:50 am (24.63.201.100)
I just don't want to waste my time on the T plotting totally fruitless approaches.
timberlinerecs - 12/04/08 - 10:51 am (128.103.18.140)
Why? I see an engagement ring or wedding band and it's a clear sign. Why would you need more?
streganona - 12/04/08 - 10:52 am (64.214.98.3)
oh, well. i was just sort of joking, having spent some time as the go-to girl to hit on if you are wearing a ring, for some reason.
eepee - 12/04/08 - 2:35 pm (96.233.26.21)
the ring is useful to wave at over-eager peet's customers.
