oh

just found some more ish

The Field Mice - Where'd You Learn To Kiss That Way?
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=vpo4h9hjmbd
----------------
This is pretty much a retrospective CD... 36 songs covering the whole career of the band. They were on the tail end of the whole C86 movement but they're just as good as any mainstay twee group (or better in some cases). Were on Sarah records. Dude and chick vocals. A lot of the stuff has that 80s production sound, but just with twee music instead of Take on Me or whatever the fuck. Great band and must-have album!

Lucky Soul - The Great Unwanted
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=md6dgmtf08f
----------------
Definitely a huge 60s/Phil Spectorish influence here. This album came out in late '06 though, and it's easily one of my favorite albums period. Pretty standard pop by 60s/Spector style, but that's what makes it so amazing. Ali has a great voice! Basically, if you don't download this album you are horrible.

Three Berry Ice Cream - Rain Drops
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=vphfbmbcmbb
----------------
This is goofy Japanese stuff. It's kind of minimalistic, but it's a nice break if you want some pop music but don't feel like shaking and twisting all over da place. Girl vocals!

The Close Lobsters - Foxheads Stalk This Land
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=9fx5hvyb9mb
----------------
This is awesome dude-fronted indiepop, and I don't really like a whole lot of dude-fronted indiepop so just download this rarity!!! Words words words.

Space Ballerinas - If Goth Was Pink
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=mj81m8gw90b
----------------
THIS IS FUCKING WEIRD. It's really good though. The girl sounds kinda bitchy, you know what I mean (that snotty cocky singing)? The music is pop but it's kinda scary pop; which I guess is why the word Goth is in the album name. Also, sometimes you hear these weird sounds that may be from Halloween toys.

Monkey Swallows the Universe - The Casket Letters
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=8v28mrh3lmf
----------------
This is acoustic folk/pop stuff with a fucking whole lot of reverb on stuff, and it rules life. The vocals have that Camera Obscura type sound, but it's a lot softer and more relaxing. You will probably bop your head a little bit, but also get that look on your face like you are contemplating something while you listen to this (even though you'll just be listening to the music -- don't actually try to start thinking about other stuff cause that'll distract you from this sw8 album thanks).

Metric - Old World Underground Where Are You Now?
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=3q6xmd4dx8b
----------------
This is more post-punk, but it's still considered to be indiepop by a handful of people, including me... and this is my thread so if you know this band already but insist that they aren't indiepop, suck it. Emily Haines has a great voice, and if you like her solo stuff you should check this out to see how she sounds with more guitars and synthy blipbloops instead of just a piano and whatever.

Camera Obscura - Park and Ride
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=ggymcqf9rbf
----------------
This is just a two song seven inch, but I figured most people who would be grabbing shit from this thread already have most of this band's stuff anyway; so I tried to upload something a little more rare. It's so rare that I have it in MP3 format, so don't sleep on this because one day there will not be MP3s of this; they'll be called something else and you will have said "I'll just get this later" and then be kicking yourself.

Acid House Kings - Monaco GP
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=x2jlsqwsdtd
----------------
Another "not as frequently downloaded" album by a pretty popular band in this genre. If you download this, you can post it on your secret password blog and then everyone will be like "OH SHIT YOU HAVE THE RAREST ALBUMS TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF," and then you can ride the glory. Dude and chick vox; kinda "homey" sounding if you know what I mean.

The Gentle Waves - Swansong for You
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=prkotx9lgrb
----------------
This is Isobel Campbell before she just called herself Isobel Campbell. It's like a secret name! Better than Belle and Sebastian -- BELIEVE IT. You can chill to this album and just be like "ahh."

The Concretes - In Colour
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=hmklhdgcl8f
----------------
This is girl-fronted Swedish pop, and it's super great! Similar to Camera Obscura and stuff like that, but more funny noises in the background and less Scottish yelping.

The Concretes - Hey Trouble
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=05dlv4cr2fd
----------------
HEY this is the same band WTF thetriforce? Wait up! Don't get mad or anything, because this album has a different singer. She brings a differnt vocal style to the band, which in some songs make this shit sound like a totally different band from the album above. If you're gonna grab the other album, you should get this one too because you can compare them and see which one you like best; or just get into it and be like "both of these albums are too good."

Sambassadeur - Sambassadeur
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=vbyy1cx093d
----------------
This is more Swedish pop. The major difference here is that the name is a pain in the ass to type. It flows off the tongue pretty well, but typing it on a computer is some serious Mavis Beacon shit. This album goes in a lot of different directions, which rules because it's like an indiepop cabaret. It also alternates between dork and babe vocals, so it's definitely a hodge podge!

Heavnly - PUNK Girl
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=frnlv76d4rf
----------------
Heavenly are another staple genre band, and they're a lot better than the stupid crap metal band that shares their name. I figured a lot of people have Le Jardin de Heavenly already, so this is another less-traded album to fap to.

El Perro Del Mar - El Perro Del Mar
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=cfwkmcchmdf
----------------
This is secret Swedish. Don't be fooled by the name! This is more folk acoustic stuff; also girl fronted, so it's kinda similar to Monkey Swallows the Universe. This is more singer-songwriterish though. It also has Camera Obscura sounding vocals.

The Sea Urchins - Stardust
http://www.mediafire.com/?wb1yzzhoixx
----------------
This is more dude-fronted stuff! It's kinda drabby so if you like listening to stuff that's "catchy" but also kinda depressing, then you'd probably like this!

The Sea Urchins - Pristine Christine
http://www.mediafire.com/?y40uly2vxwb
----------------
Same band as above! This is actually the first record Sarah records ever put out. It's only a seven inch, but if you have enough of an imagination, you can probably distort the fabric of reality by listening to this so much that you end up thinking you were around for the start of the whole Sarah records era. Try it at least!

Park Ave - When Jamie Went To London We Broke Up
http://www.mediafire.com/?y2mh9y03dj2
----------------
This is and all-star member of dorky puss bands like Bright Eyes, The Faint and Tilly and the Wall, but unfortunately there is NO TAPDANCING on this record. It's kind of cool to listen to if you want some old low-fi indie stuff. It's also better than Bright Eyes and The Faint, which is obviously not hard to outdo. It can't touch Tilly and the Wall though.

Talulah Gosh - Backwash
http://www.mediafire.com/?2mgoelytmzd
----------------
This is another discography album type deal. Talulah Gosh were a pretty big driving force in twee. Amelia is the singer in this bad boy, and she was also involved with Heavenly and Marine Research. But, if you know who she is you probably already knew that so don't freak!!!!! A lot of his has that rough indie production from the 80s, which compliments the songs perfectly. Don't be dumb!

Anyway you could fix the links for Space Ballerinas, Three Berry Icecream, The Gentle Waves, and the Acid House Kings?

Also, anything else from Monkey Swallowed the Universe would rock.

The name "The Litter" was presented to the band by Jim Kane and chosen over several other suggestions including "The Mustys". The original connotation of "The Litter" referred to a "litter" of puppies NOT trash or garbage as many people have assumed over the years. The album title $100 Fine was in part responsible for perpetuating this misconception.
Tom "Zip" Caplan replaced Bill Strandlof in 1967 after Bill had recorded Action Woman, Legal Matter and Soul Searchin' for the Distortions album. The album was finished with "Zip" playing lead on the rest of the tracks.
In the early days "The Litter" would learn songs from English albums imported to Jim Kane from a friend. Not yet released in the United States, these songs were mistaken by audiences for original "Litter" tunes.
"The Litter" was the first group in the Mid-West to use lights and strobes in their stage act.
Dan Rinaldi was the first musician in "The Litter", and in fact in the entire Mid-West, to smash his equipment on stage.

"The Litter" as a group was the first band in the Mid-West to use fire and smoke as well as wrecking their equipment as part of their stage show.

Contrary to popular belief it was "The Litter" not "The Electras" (later renamed "Twas Brillig" for the national release of Warren Kendrick's Dirty Old Man) who recorded Action Woman first in Nov. 1966. "The Electras" recorded their own version for Kendrick in the spring of 1967, but this 45 rpm was never released and is extremely rare. "The Litter" 45 rpm of Action Woman also commands big bucks on todays collectors market.

The song Action Woman written by Warren Kendrick, was a major regional hit, but never made the national charts.

Action Woman was re-released in 1968 with Whatcha Gonna Do About It? on the flip side. Due to a very limited pressing this 45rpm is also extremely rare.

Action Woman has been covered over the years by "The Lime Spiders" on their album The Cave Comes Alive - Virgin Records - Vinyl LP - 1987, "The Hypstrz" on their picture sleeve vinyl EP - Bogus Records - 1979 and by "Naz Nomad and The Nightmares" (formerly "The Damned") on the British album Give Daddy The Knife Cindy - Big Beat Records - Vinyl LP - 1984. and The Tall Boys on the compilation album Single Minded - Big Beat Records - CD - WIKD109. All of these records are out of print with the exception of the "Naz Nomad" which is available on CD.

Action Woman has been covered live by "The Replacements", Ken Hyland and "Jordan and the Half Transplants", the latter two are East Coast bands. The original version of the song appears on the soon to be released The Litter - Live at Mirage - 1990 and was updated in 1992 by "The Litter" for the new studio album Re-Emerge.

The song Soul Searchin' from the album Distortions, was originally titled (Just A Little) Soul Searchin' on the 45 rpm and was recorded first by "The Electras", another Warren Kendrick group. It has since been covered by "The Cynics" (Get-Hip GH-1000) on the album Blue Train Station.

The instrumental The Mummy which follows Substitute on the album Distortions was arranged by "Zip" Caplan and keyboardist Bernie Bomberg in 1963 after hearing it in the 1932 Boris Karloff film The Mummy.

Jim Kane not Denny Waite recorded the Hammond Organ parts on The Mummy for the album Distortions, Denny Waite played the parts on stage.

The title Distortions was Warren Kendrick's idea after he realized that almost every song on the album utilized fuzz tone guitars.

Every sound effect heard on I'm A Man from the Distortions album was created by a musical instrument and to keep the vocals in character with these strange and wild sounds, Denny Waite sang through a filter.

The little "ditty" heard at the very end of the K-Tel re-issue of Distortions was played by Denny Waite as a joke between takes and was recorded by accident. Excluded from the original Distortions it is untitled on the re-issue. Denny, who wrote it while in High School, calls it Harpsichord Sonata #1.

Contrary to popular belief, the second "Litter" album $100 Fine, had fewer copies pressed (1000), than its predecessor Distortions with 2000 copies.

The album name $100 Fine was "Zippy" Caplan's idea after he saw a sign on the highway during a road trip to Chicago with the warning "No Littering - $100 Fine".

Unable to come up with an idea for the $100 Fine album cover, "Zippy" Caplan suggested to Warren Kendrick that a color photo of Denny Waite's face be blown up to dot information proportions but Kenrick used a picture of one of Murrays' drums instead.

Blues One from the $100 Fine album was the first original song exclusively written by "Litter" members.

In order to fill out time on Side 1 of the $100 Fine album, the last track was added by Warren Kendrick after the album was finished. Calling it Apologies to 2069 Warren put it together in the studio using parts of Action Woman slowed down and parts of Tallyman and Kaleidoscope played backwards. Mixed with electronic sound effects, he used to say it was his way of apologizing to the people of the future for the crude recording technologies of the 1960's.

The song Kaleidoscope from the album $100 Fine was the first American made recording to use the then new phasing technology thanks to Warren Kendrick.

The version of "The Zombies" She's Not There used on the $100 Fine album was arranged by "Zippy" Caplan and guitarist friend Randy Resnick ("John Mayall Group") and presented to "The Litter" by Caplan. The idea for the arrangement came to the two guitarists while they were experimenting with the song after being influenced by the "Doors'" Light My Fire and "Quicksilver's" Gold and Silver.

The album $100 Fine was #10 on the Twin Cities album charts in 1968 and received a major write-up and review in the Star and Tribune.

"The Litter" recorded a song called Angelica while in Texas recording $100 Fine in 1968. Since the vocalist was J. Frank Wilson (Last Kiss fame) this song was excluded from the album's final version. Due for release by J. Frank Wilson, it was pulled after (a very similar type song) Honey (Bobby Goldsboro) hit the charts big. This cut, to date, has not appeared on any "Litter" album or compilation and is the rarest "Litter" recording.

Angelica, written by the well known songwriting team of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, was originally released by Barry Mann on Capital in July 1966 and later re-released in 1971 by Ed Ames on RCA. Neither version became a hit song.

"The Litter" recorded 8 songs with Larry Loofbourrow and Ted Dooley at Goldstar Studios in California during the late 60's. Also involved in these recording sessions were Roy Hensley ("The Castaways") David Z. (formerly David Rivkin - "The Chancellors" and Prince's chief engineer), and Bruce Pedalty ("The Accents") on keyboard. These songs are as yet unreleased. Loofbourrow was a "Litter" songwriter in the 1960's - Morning Sun, Confessions (of a Traveler Through Time) and The Egyptian. Later he penned Coming Down for "White Lightning".

Dan Rinaldi took center stage and sang the lead vocal on only one song at live "Litter" performances. "The Music Machine's" Talk Talk brought down the house every time. (This song can be heard for the first time ever on the album The Litter - Live At Mirage 1990 - soon to be released.)

"The Litter" was the No. 1 draw in Chicago clubs in the late 1960's with the main venue being The Electric Theatre.

Aaron Russo (Bette Midler's long time manager) owned The Electric Theatre and wanted to manage the group. He was turned down.

In 1968 Electra Records made an offer to sign the group after their performance at the famed Cheetah Club in LA. with "Genesis" and "The Iron Butterfly".

In August 1968 "The Litter" recorded 7 songs live at The Electric Theatre for the movie "Medium Cool". The band was paid $500 for the days shooting, but when the movie was released to theatres the scenes of "The Litter" on stage were intact but the soundtrack was Frank Zappa.

In 1969 The Electric Theatre in Chicago held a contest to see which band was louder, "The Litter", or "Blue Cheer". "The Litter" won hands down.

ABC Probe Records signed "The Litter" sight unseen to a recording contract and the album Emerge - The Litter was recorded in Michigan. Although the record was charting in Billboard and the group was touring the U.S. with acts like "The Who", unavailability of their albums due to distribution problems, plagued the group everywhere they appeared.

The album Emerge - The Litter is the only album by the group to chart in Billboard magazine.

The album Emerge - The Litter was #1 in Puerto Rico and successful as well in the European market.

The single Silly People (flip side Feeling) from the album Emerge - The Litter was picked as a Special Merit Spotlight in Billboard magazine, but was banned from airplay by some radio stations because of the lyrics.

"The Litter" often played on a double bill with ("White") "Lightning".

All the albums by "The Litter" have been bootlegged on vinyl and/or CD since the early 80's. Their quality is fair to poor at best.

The bootlegged record The Litter - Rare Tracks is NOT a "Litter" album. Only 5 of the 14 songs are actual "Litter" recordings. The remaining tracks are by other real groups and not by "The Litter" using alias recording names, as stated in the albums liner notes.

For a period of time in the 1980's a band was touring certain European cities calling themselves "The Litter" It is unknown if anyone realized this group was a phony.

The K-Tel Re-Issue of Distortions made the Top 10 List of album Re-Issues for 1991 as reported by "Flashback", a music industry trade publication.

The K-Tel Re-Issue of $100 Fine received notice and a write-up in Billboard Magazine's "GrassRoots" column.

"The Litter" has toured all over the United States and Canada playing such venues as The Electric Theatre - Chicago, The Peppermint Lounge - New York, "Cheetah" Club in L.A. and the Chicago Amphitheater among many others. They also appeared on an East Coast syndicated Top 40 TV show, the locally syndicated B-Sharp Beat and the famous network TV Rock Variety Series "Hullabaloo". The band has been billed with such famous acts as "The Who", "Brian Augar", "Canned Heat". "The Iron Butterfly", "Genesis", "Eric Burdon & War", "Blue Cheer", "Joe Cocker", "Grand Funk Railroad" "Led Zeppelin" and "Cream" to mention just a few.

"The Litter" has been written up in countless books and magazines including "Billboard", "Cream Magazine" - Detroit, "Kansas City Free Press", "Pulse", "Goldmine", "New Music Report", "Mpls. Star & Tribune", "St. Paul Pioneer Press", "Chicago Tribune", and "Twin Cities Reader". Articles on the group can be found in the books "The Acid Trip - A Complete Guide to Psychedelic Music" published in the U.K. in 1988, Joel Whitburns "Top Pop Albums 1955-1996", Tom Tourvilles "Minnesota Rocked - The 1960's" (all 4 editions), "The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music" Vol. 4 L-P, "The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and Roll" - 1997- Random House and numerous Record Price Guides and Music Listing Editions.

There have been 12 different versions of "The Litter" from 1966-2000.

The Koala were a late 60's group from New York who released one album on Capitol Records, where some genius decided to market the group as a bunch of Aussies...without getting anyone's permission first! The group got wind of this, after the fact, and broke up soon after the album's release. guaranteeing it a life of obscurity for the next few decades. Now that the market for 1960's psych/garage obscurities is strong, Fallout Records has put the group's one album out on cd for the first time ever, and it's a surprisingly good listen.

The Koala may be a cute and fuzzy animal, but this band was the exact opposite, playing snarling and aggressive music that was influenced by Hendrix, The Who and The Small Faces. This is no run of the mill period piece though, thanks to the leering vocals of Jose Mala (who went on the front 70's glam-rockers The Magic Tramps and played in The Joe Perry Project) and the innovative psychedelic guitar playing of Joey Guido and Louis Cane. When it's all added up you get an album that predates 1970's hard-rock and punk, and The Koala serves as proof that there's still some undiscovered gems sitting in record company vaults.

Fantastic double CD anthology of this legendary 60's Pensylvania psych/garage/rock outfit featuring future Edgar Winter band member Dan Hartman. 49 tracks including all the original singles, outtakes and oodles of previously unreleased material plus a quicktime movie! Garage freaks and psychedelic heads need this album. The Hendrixy "Fever Games" track and trippy "High Towers" tracks are a must!!!

Some people know 'em as the spawning ground for Dan Hartman of Edgar Winter "Free Ride"/"I Can Dream About You" fame. Other people know 'em for their four excellent singles. But until you've heard Arf! Arf! Records' new double-CD High Towers compilation retrospective, you haven't gotten the full perspective on the Legends.

From '64 to '73, the Legends were as synonymous with Central Pennsylvania as a Hershey Bar with almonds, and every bit as tasty. They got the audiences dancing with their mix of pop, rock and soul in the mid-'60s, freaked 'em out with heavy psychedelia in the late '60s, then rocked 'em back outta their shells with even harder rock in the early '70s. All phases are documented on High Towers, which traces the rise of the Legends from their garage band roots playing teen hops and fire halls into seasoned rockers blowing the doors off larger venues.

Featuring their four locally released singles and a promotional-only flexi from 1970, the first CD documents the Legends from 1967 to 1973, their most renowned era. But the listening pleasure doesn't end with rare 45 sides like the stompin' freakbeat cover of "Baby Get Your Head Screwed On" from '67 and the quirky wah-wah piano of "High Towers" from '69. CD number one is rounded out by a bevy of previously unreleased material, including seven more power-trio psych-outs from 1969, three pounding hard rockers from 1973 that should have the stoner rock crowd in air-guitar heaven, and even a CD-ROM of a video made by band ally Jerry King Musser in 1972 to promote "Rock and Roll Woman," a regional smash (later licensed to Epic Records) that almost got the Legends on American Bandstand.

And then there's the second CD, which throws a life preserver to those '60s fanatics who abandon ship when the captain's into psychedelia or hard rock. Fear not, garage fiends, as CD number two completes the Legends' voyage with 26 previously unissued cuts from 1965 and 1966, including a few band originals and teen-fueled renditions of "Shakin' All Over," "You Really Got Me" "I Need You," "Don't Bring Me Down" and even the Shadows of Knight's fuzz ripper, "I'm Gonna Make You Mine." Perhaps the coolest garage vault find of all, however, is a pair of cuts by the Donshires (featuring future Legend Joe Caloiero) from 1965, "Sad and Blue" and "Tripeline," which would be lighting up eBay if the songs had ever been pressed on a single.

The musical experience is only enhanced by a 24-page booklet lined with pictures, memorabilia and a detailed band history (including interviews with six former members) by Doug Sheppard of Discoveries/Ugly Things. Whether you're into garage, psych, hard rock or even Dan Hartman himself, High Towers is guaranteed to scale the rock and roll heights for you.

Although formed primarily as a blues label, Mainstream Records released a number of interesting psychedelic albums in the late 60s. Some of the better of these include Bohemian Vendetta, The Jelly Bean Bandits, Orient Express, and The Growing Concern.

Although virtually nothing is known of the Growing Concern, their only album is an enjoyable piece of West Coast psychedelic pop. The opening track “Hard, Hard Year” is perhaps the best on the album. The song opens with some melodic guitar work, which is joined first by bass, and second by some excellent keyboards. The song also featured beautiful female vocal harmonies from group members Bonnie MacDonald and Mary Garstki.

This song largely set the style for the remainder of the album. “Edge of Time” featured some excellent lead guitar work, as did “Tomorrow Has Been Cancelled.” “A Boy I Once Knew Well” was a folky lament which again featured fine vocal harmonies, keyboards, and guitar work. The group’s version of “Mister You’re a Better Man than I” was done in a similar style, and is an interesting take on the Yardbirds original. The group also covered Steve Stills’s “Sit Down, I Think I Love You, based on the Buffalo Springfield original rather than the more baroque hit version by The Mojo Men. The entire album is characterized by fine male and female vocal harmonies, excellent keyboard playing, and occasionally fine guitar work. Overall, The Growing Concern album is a quite good blend of folk rock, pop, and psychedelia. The CD reissue is from the German label Golden Reborn Classics, and benefits from rather good sound quality. Well worth a spin.

This blues outfit formed in the Summer of 1967 in London. By the beginning of 1968 Tony Walker and Roger Pearce had both quit the music business. The line-up (B) was playing a solid Chicago-styled blues. In July 1968 they turned professional. By now Steve Rye had departed for Simon and Steve and Tony McPhee, a friend of Dave Kelly's, came in on guitar. However, McPhee's stay was brief - a few month later he left to join The Groundhogs. Their two albums for Mercury are the most sought-after by collectors.

Dummer followed this with Music Band, a venture with violinist Nick Pickett, which achieved little here but had a French hit with Nine By Nine.

Shortening their name to John Dummer they signed to Vertigo recording Blue, with a cover designed by Roger Dean. The music was still competent blues-rock, but nowhere near as good as their earlier late sixties offerings on Mercury. Then, teaming up again with his original guitarist Dave Kelly, Dummer recorded Oobleedooblee Jubilee with a country-influenced band.

Johnny Winter My Fathers Place 10/4-1980 Fm Radio. (A+ Quality)

John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born on 23 February 1944 in Beaumont, Texas, USA) is an American blues guitarist, singer and producer. He is the first son of John and Edwina Winter who were very much responsible for both Johnny's and younger brother Edgar Winter's early musical awareness. Both Johnny and Edgar have albinism.

Johnny began performing at an early age with Edgar. His recording career began at the age of 15, when their band Johnny and the Jammers released "School Day Blues" on a Houston record label. During this same period, he was able to see performances by classic blues artists such as Muddy Waters, B. B. King and Bobby Bland.

In 1968, Winter began playing in a trio with bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Uncle John Turner. An article in Rolling Stone magazine written by Larry Sepulvado helped generate interest in the group. The album Johnny Winter was released near the end of that year. In 1969 they performed at numerous rock festivals including Woodstock. Contrary to urban legend, however, Johnny did not perform with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison on the infamous Hendrix bootleg recording "Woke up this Morning and Found Myself Dead" done at New York City's Scene Club. He has said, "Oh, I never even met Jim Morrison! There's a whole album of Jimi and Jim and I'm supposedly on the album but I don't think I am `cause I never met Jim Morrison in my life! I'm sure I never, never played with Jim Morrison at all! I don't know how that [rumour] got started."

Winter struggled with a heroin addiction in the early part of his career. After eventually recovering from the addiction, in 1973, he returned to the music scene in classic form with Still Alive and Well, a song written by Rick Derringer saluting Winter for overcoming his addiction.

In live performances, Winter often tells the story about how, as a child, he dreamed of playing with the blues guitarist Muddy Waters. In 1977, he accomplished this goal and produced the Muddy Waters album Hard Again. In 1978, he experienced continued success with the production of Waters' I'm Ready. He followed this in 1980, by producing Muddy's final effort, the album King Bee. Their partnership produced a number of Grammy-winning recordings throughout, and he recorded the album Nothing but the Blues with members from Muddy Waters' band.

There are quite a few Johnny Winter albums that are considered "non-official." A majority of these albums were produced by the late Roy Ames, owner of Home Cooking Records/ Clarity Music Publishing. According to a Houston Press article dated Aug 28, 2003, Johnny Winter left town for the express purpose of getting away from him. Roy Ames died on August 14, 2003 of natural causes at age 66. As Ames left no obvious heirs, the ownership rights of the Ames master recordings remains unclear.

As Johnny stated in an interview when the subject of Roy Ames came up, "This guy has screwed so many people it makes me mad to even talk about him."

DO YOU WANT HEAD? BLOW YOUR MIND WITH THE HEAD SHOP ALBUM!', screams a commercial ad in New York's Screw magazine in l969. Here's the CD reissue from the original mastertape, including bios, photos and 7 bonus tracks. The album was produced and arranged by Milan, aka Rick Rodell, and Max Ellen, both professionals in the music business. The band had garagy roots and evolved from Household Sponge to The Head Shop. Milan´s project that time was Licorice Schtik.

Both outfits released a 45 record, which are 4 bonus tracks on this CD. This New York psychedelic underground project has its unique sound: soulful vocals, flying Hammond organ, fuzzy bass, distorted lead guitars, lots of percussive -- and weird -- rhythm instruments, plus several unexpected stereo effects. Larry Coryell features as 'wailing' guest musician on the track, 'I Feel Love Comin' on'. 'Listen with the Third Ear,' and this album and 9 musical chapters will lead you into new musical and audiophile dimensions of psychedelic art of music."

CD reissue from the original mastertape, including bios, photos and 7 bonus tracks of this classic US '60s expolito-psych album that goes totally over the top. Crammed full of distorted acid guitar and weird effects (choirs, backwards bits etc.) this is like a bit like Vanilla Fudge but much more extreme... Tracks like "Listen With A Third Ear" and "Prophecy" are particularly mind disturbing. CD contains 7 bonus tracks. This is fantastic psychedelia.

This eccentric New York hippie collective recorded only one album, which makes its CD debut here.

A superb collection of psychedelia, touching on folk, jazz and electronica, it has been compared to Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas & the Papas and Tim Buckley, but ultimately has a sound of its own that makes it a treat for all fans of genuine acid rock. There is some fine guitar work on Moonlight Dip, Aunt Ida and Banana Split, which is quite trippy in places. Definitely worth a listen.

Freaked out, fuzzed-up work from Group Image -- a group who definitely live up to the trippy title and cover of this album! The sound here isn't nearly as fantastical as you might guess from the image on the front, but it's still plenty great -- a post-folk sound that's heavy on guitars, which are played sometimes soft, sometimes sharply -- and often topped with earnestly harmonic vocals. The bass is earthy and dirty at the bottom of the tracks, giving the record a really nice edge -- but there's also a hippie-oriented sweetness to some of the singing that really warms things up -- especially on the numbers that feature vocals from Sheila Darla. Titles include "A Way To Love You All The Time", "Hiya", "Moonlit Dip", "Voices Calling Me", "My Man", "Aunt Ida", "Banana Split", and "Grew Up All Wrong".A hippie outfit from New Jersey. Hiya, a shorter version of an album track can be heard on Pebbles, Vol. 14 (LP). The high pitched, often manic vocals, make this song at least rather a novelty. At times it recalls Tim Buckley in his prime. Hiya is the outstanding track on an inconsistent album which has its moments. There is also some fine guitar work on Moonlight Dip and Aunt Ida and on Banana Split, which is quite trippy in places. Definitely worth a listen.

The album was produced by Vinny Testa, Shadow Morton (aka Shadow Mann) and John Linde and recorded in NY. All the tracks were penned by the group.

Nowhere near as well known as Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators, to our ears fellow Texans The Golden Dawn are actually the more impressive band. 'Course those sentiments are bound to upset Erickson fans and will do little to rectify the fact that outside of hardcore collectors' circles these guys remain criminally overlooked.

Living in Austin, Texas, singer George Kinney grew up with Roky Erickson, attending the same schools. While in high school the two played together in a local garage band The Fugitives. With The Fugitives collapsing, Kinney moved on to join The Chelsea (along with future 13th Floor Elevator guitarist Powell St. John). When that group called it quits, he was invited to join fellow high school friends guitarist Jimmy Bird, bassist Bill Hallmark, guitarist Tom Ramsey and drummer Bobby Rector in The Golden Dawn.

Kinney's friendship with Erickson also proved handy in terms of career development. Erickson was largely responsible for getting Leland Rogers' International Artists label to sign the band in 1967 (coincidently Erickson and the Elevators were already signed to International Artists).

Produced by Rogers (yes, Kenny's brother), 1967's "Power Plant" actually bares a strong resemblance to The Elevators' catalog. The two bands certainly share the same mid-60s; low-tech Texas-psych roots, though to their credit these guys don't sound as strung out as The Elevators and (at least to our ears), Kinney's a better singer (though his fragile and occasionally shrill voice stands as an acquired taste). With Kinney and drummer Rector responsible for the majority of the 10 songs, musically the set's quite diverse. Tracks such as the opener "Evolution" and "The Way Please" boast a pleasing mix of pretty melodies and surprisingly complex and intriguing lyrics. Even better are the harder rocking numbers. Propelled by Bird and Ramsey's fuzz guitars, "Starvation", "I'll Be Around" and "My Time" are simply killer. Going out on a limb, we'll say this is a must-own psych classic and should be on most folk's top-40 psych lists. (Ignoring the illicit cannabis/mushroom subject matter, the LP's granted an extra star for the cool day-glo cover art.) (Bill Hallmark)

Ghost formed in Birmingham in the late sixties. They started out playing a heavish sort of blues-rock before they met up with singer Shirley Kent who'd already recorded two tracks on a charity EP, The Master Singers And Shirley Kent Sing For Charec 67 (Keele University 103) in 1966. Paul Eastment had earlier played in Velvett Fogg.

They recorded their album at the end of 1969, spawning their first 45 at the end of the year. When You're Dead was a strong song with a clear US West Coast influence. It was hardly Chart material, though, so predictably sales were poor. The album came out in January 1970. There's a clear contrast between the folk pieces that Shirley Kent sings on like Hearts And Flowers and Time Is My Enemy, which in style recall Sandy Denny's heyday in Fairport Convention, and the blues-rock numbers contributed by the rest of the band, of which For One Second sounds the strongest. Also worth checking out is the powerful Too Late To Cry. The album has now become a major collector's item, partly on account of its rarity but also on account of the breadth of its appeal to fans of both blues-rock and folk.

The band returned to the studio in Spring 1970 to record I've Got To Get To Know You. Another track from their album, For One Second, was put on the flip, but when the 45 failed to sell the band slowly began to fall apart. Shirley Kent left to pursue a solo career and eventually released an album in 1975, Fresh Out, under the pseudonym Virginia Tree. I haven't heard it but it's reputedly folkier than Ghost's output and featured former band members Paul Eastment and Terry Guy on three of the tracks. After Kent's departure, the remaining band members soldiered on for a while using the name Resurrection but this later incarnation of the band didn't make it onto vinyl.

In 1987, Bam-Caruso reissued Ghost's album under the title For One Second with the addition of the non-LP 45 track, I've Got To Get To Know You. More recently the album has been reissued on vinyl and CD.

The above album by this Boston band contains some good tracks. All the material was written by the band. Mr. Man and Crystal Forms both portray Stratton's vocals favourably and include some good guitar work. Others, such as Actions Of A Man and What Good Is Spring? find Caroline and the band in a mellower mood.

"Very rare album by The Flow with Pete Fine on guitars/vocals, Monte Farber on bass/vocals, Steve Starer on drums, compositions by Pete Fine and Monte Farber. This is a guitar burner total. If you´re into Blue Cheer and extra heavy Fuzz guitar is your thing, you´ll love this album. Great songs, a mindblower. Finally it came out on CD with 3 bonus tracks and poster-booklett.

'In those rebellious and psychedelic times we barely earned enough to pay for food at times, while developing our musical horizons. I am amazed we survived those days. Eventually, we became a 3 piece band - The Flow.

We rented a room in NYC -- also renting a room was Wicked Lester, a band later to be known as KISS. We used the space for our own explorations. With our limited funds, we could only complete half of the project so we released the record with one blank side and later on, added more material.'

tone cold classic US '60s heavy psych rock album that was released on the same label as Felt and Whalefeathers. The band came from Memphis and the album includes the awesome track "Within Your State Of Mind". Buddhist vibes meet Southern hippy rock with cosmic sound effects and trippy acid guitar work. Fantastic. Features a mini gatefold LP styled CD cover and improved sound quality.

Not a mega-blowout album, Just driving bluesy R&R with southern twang, growly lead vocal with black baptist church choir style backing. Vocals aside, it sounds like it was a studio live recording. Highlights include interplay between the lead guitar and Wurlitzer organ puncuated with erie moog effects and propelled by a solid rhythym section. Lyric wise, its largely a reiteration of the "Golden Rule". Some may find the first track corny, but overall the songs hold up better than a lot of stuff from that era by better known groups. A promising effort from a sadly ill-fated group. Two members died in a car crash within months of its completion and the group broke up. Anyone know what became of guitarist/songwriter Dave Hall?

Rain - Demo Tape
Often looked over, Rain were another outstanding band birthed (in '86) from the second wave of the famed Revolution Summer. Consisting of the core three piece of Eli Janney, Bert Quieroz, & Jon Kishten, they played in an earnest style not unlike Rites of Spring and garnered a small but loyal following in their short exsistence. In '87 they were joined by future Soulsider Scott McCloud and recorded what would be their long-awaited post humous release La Vache Qui Rit (eventually released in 1990 on Peterbilt and re-released last year on Dischord). You can read more about that over here (Tim is a stand up gentleman and did such a fine job describing it in the first place). What I'm here to submit to the fray (in case for some reason you didn't read the post's heading) would be their demo. The one before Scott McCloud joined the band. Three songs would later be re-recorded on their inner ear sessions, but these are where their musical journey begins and you get a song not featured anywhere else. I'm not saying anything other than suck it.
